First question: Are you going to run Linux or a Unix variant? 64mb of RAM is not enough to run Windows. Also a 166mhz PC might decode mp3's if it wasn't running Linux. Otherwise, it would be dicey.

I'm not sure what kind of display the 4X20 is, but it sounds like a serial LCD display. So to make the computer work, you'll need:

If you only want to play mp3's, buy an iPod new for $299, used for less. Otherwise, you're looking at:

    1. Power supply. An Opus runs $160.
    2. A screen. If you go cheap, you might get one for $150 or maybe a bit less.
    3. A keyboard. $20 bucks on sale?

You'd also need some way to get the songs on the computer, either using an ethernet cable or wireless card or USB device. The motherboard you described may not have provisions for that.

I realize you probably already have the stuff you listed on hand and so it was free, but unless you are a fairly sophisticated computer user, it sounds like it would be very difficult to get it to work.

Bugbyte - hate to differ - but thats close to all i got so far

de4mon - for that list of equipment - look back through the really old posts in terms of the display.
what are you going to do for input?
    power?

    Im running a 400Mhz (i think), 3gb hdd, 64mb ram, win98, 2x16 charater display , creative serial IR remote, morex 60w psu
If you only want to run mp3's at the moment (as i am) - 64mb ram is heaps.
So i got win98, running winamp with a few plugins for the display, and girder to run the remote (as the creative remote is weird and isnt recognised by the lcd program)

start by asking yourself how much money u have to spent on it? cuanto cuarto va a gasta en la vaina etá?
is all your set up already running or you just have all the stuff laying around,?
1 a power sourse ( an inverter is cheaper) connect everything as a regular computer,
2 make sure there is nothing loose or anything that will short out
3 get a mp3 decoder (like winamp lite)
4 a key pad to control your software
5 smoth driving( don't want to mess up your hard drive
6,7,8 un buen coro pa divertilte.

I KNEW as soon as I wrote that, someone would turn up with a system that was similar!

Question: without a screen, how does it work? Do you set it up with a CRT and then run it headless? How do you control it? What is girder?

How much music do you get on there with 3gig total?

I wouldn't be so sure My system runs Windows 98 SE (fully loaded) and it's a Pentium 133 with 16 mb of RAM. Decodes MP3s on the fly using Winamp 5. Loads fast too.

    bugbyte -

hehehe- you should seen me in the testing -
10-20m extension cord, 19" CRT monitor sitting in rear seats

Works just fine without a screen.
kudos for that has to go to markus zehnder tho....
    his LCD thingy here
Ive just seen that work has some 4x40 displays - with bigger text - (about 3"x6") so i gunna talk to the guys to see if one can fall of the back of a truck somewhere.

For control - i got this IR remote. Does the job - yet to hack it up and hide it tho. The case doesnt look that bad.
Got to work on hardwiring in some other forms of input - looking at a redundant cruise control lever on my trademe (EBay) steering wheel.

Girder - ummmm. basicly - inputs from anything to control anything on your computer, run macro's etc etc etc.

music - ohhh not as much as i have - the only problem is that with more music - more things to scroll through. Win98 takes ~200-300mg, (i think) so i think theres about 600 odd songs. Enough.

Im thinking about doing something along the lines of where your lcd is... except i want it to rise vertically, not fold open. (so only a 1"x8" cut).
Still havent found whats actually under there in my car yet.... on the todo list.
