    Are dual power supplies possible?

Hi all, I am just thinking of building a CarPC and am finding that i have a 150W limitation on the power supply (Opus). Can i use 2 power supplies? One to power the PC and the other for allsorted accessories?

I have already fitted a second battery in my car on a split charging circuit to power my stereo amps and would be running the PC from this battery as well.

    Anyone done this?
Is it possible / practical / needed?

I would like to run a P4 or Athlon 3000+ in the car but i know they are very power hungry.

    Yup: Double the Wattage

Just make sure you only connect one to the motherboard (i.e. use one for mobo and a few othe rbits and one for drives, screen etc) oh and splice the power on leads together. Wires 14 or 15 i think but check 1st - there is some mor einfo on it. NEVER EVER run a power supply with no load though or it wont be happy!

hang on, not usre if you need the atx conenctor connected to a mobo so it sets the voltage etc ok. There is some mention of a doubled up conenctor on that thread but i am sure there are more threads about it that was just the 1st that came to mind.

    Er... um... why?

The only reason I'm going from P3 1GHz to P4 1.6GHz is because I've got the parts laying around and will be able to have PCI slots and dual monitor support, and the P3 is a small prefab unit (which will go into my next car).

You're not stealing my gaming van idea, are you?

Ummmm... might be... what was it again

I am going in to business next year with my own PC repair shop and a mate of mine installs stereos for a living... he suggested we combine our talents and design and fit CarPC's... so with that in mind we thought of putting the following in a test car (mine ) Starting with a budget of 3000 we have:

    PC (P4 3.2, X800 Graphics 1Gb Ram etc etc)
Kicking stereo system (3000W min) with a custom build in the boot
Dash screen (instead of double din radio) Lilliput 7" touchscreen
    Headrest screens
    P/S2 games box....

I have already fitted a second battery to power this lot (on split charge) so we can run for a while with the engine off.

I'm starting the boot build this weekend so it should be done for xmas.

oh and all this lot is hidden (full stealth cos of the theeving buggers around here! ) with the exception of the screens

You are hiding an extra battery, ATX mobo with AGP etc, 3000W stereo, 2 power supplies - what car???? Are you doing an engine transplant from a V8 to a 1 litre to make room!!!

Seriously though, good luck with it all but why not go for a 10.4" fold down monitor from the roof as you really want to display the graphics power properly and maybe rethink your choice of screen (i know i am risking a flaming from lilliput owners) bt it wont look very good if you want to show it off and the screen is away for repair - it only gonna cost you a little bit more - better to tone down the grpahics and or CPU and go for better quality stuff i reckon.

ahhh so by stealth you mean when you open the boot you jsut see a load of carpet and just enough room to fit a half-eaten packet of hob-nobs! Unfortunately my car is a workhorse and I dont have the luxury of being able to take up a chunk of my boot space with a big sub or PC - i am struggling to find a way to mount a 1" thick laptop (footprint about A4), a small amp and i would like to add more bass but still allow me to put the seats down flat and use most of the boot area. I have a friend who had an ex-showcar, it was a little fiat punto turbo with a boot full of amps, speakers and blue neons....and all i could think is where would you put the pushchair when you have kids? 24 going on 40 i think!!!!!
