    Monitor/Sound Card/Computer power question

    Hey guys,

I'm a newbie here and I've purchased a 7'' Xenarc touchscreen monitor as well as an external sound card(Sound Blaster Audigy 2 NX). For simplicity I'm going to have the monitor plug into a cigarette lighter, and the sound card plug into a power inverter, which will be plugged into a cigarette lighter. When I power off the car, forcing a hard shut down of the monitor and sound card, is this bad for the devices? For electric devices in general, is pressing the on/off switch the same as pulling the plug from the wall? Is suddenly turning off your car the same as powering down a device such as the xenarc or sound card through the on/off button/switch?

    Thanks for your help guys.

The Xenarc should handle the shutdowns fine because it was designed for that. The sound card will be connected to your computer, and it should shutdown with the computer. You will have a shutdown controller, right?

computer shutdown and sound card shutdown

Thank you for the reply. I am using a laptop for my project. The laptop will be connected to a power inverter. which will be connected to a cigarette lighter. The sound card will be connected to that same power inverter. I still haven't figured out exactly what I'm gonna do about startup/shutdown when the car turns on/off. I was hoping that when I turn off the car, I can get the laptop to hibernate (i don't mind doing it manually for now from the touchscreen right in front of me). However, my laptop will not wake up unless the power button is physically pressed, meaning i'd have to open the trunk to wake it up from hibernation. Is there anyway around this? Also, what do you think about the sound card power issue?

    My reply

    Hi.

Thanks for your comments. I"m not sure I understand how purchasing a cigarette adapter for my laptop would make my life easier. The xenarc will be hooked up to a cigarette lighter in the front of my car. I also have a cigarette lighter in the trunk of my car. I would like to keep the laptop in the trunk of the car just to hide as much as I can. I already have a power inverter. I will plug the laptop into the power inverter and the power inverter into the cigarette lighter. Since the power inverter I have has two slots on it, i figure it makes sense to use one for the laptop and one for the sound card. I am worried about shutting down the sound card when turning off the car, since it will be connected to the power inverter, and the power inverter is connected to the cigarette lighter. Should I be worried about blowing out the sound card.

Computers operate on DC power. Your car's electrical system is DC power. The car adapter for the laptop takes advantage of this.

An inverter converts DC power to AC power. With that you can have AC power which is then converted back to DC for the computer to operate.

So you could either have DC -> DC witht he laptop car adapter or DC -> AC -> DC with the inverter.

And the sound card is designed to power on/off witht he computer. That's not too much of a worry in my opinion.
Have you looked in the FAQ yet?

the sound card should be oklj but you might get some nasty noise if you are plugging it into power amps and they come on before the card or they turn off after the card. for my install i was thinking of connecting the lid switch on my laptop to the ignition switch to put it into/out of standby when the car is off or on and wiring the power button onto my alarm so it will turn off/on when i arm/disarm but not sure if the power button will work if the laptop is in standby?

The software (OS) is more likely to have trouble with this than the hardware.
