    1992 Camaro RS

    Hey guys I'm back...

My project (or lack, thereof) was put on hold do to the fact that I didn't have the funds nescessary to pull it off. However, now I'm ready for what is to become of me .

I'm coming to you guys for a few things, a few questions if you will. My original thready can be seen here.

Originally, I was going to be using a 633MHz Celeron PC (a Hewlett Packard pull), but I think now that I have the money, I'm going to go with an Via Epia M10000 and about 256-512MB of DDR266. (PC2700 IIRC). As for the powersupply, if I'm going with a motherboard that is so small, I mine as well go with a small powersupply, last time I was around, the best thing around for that purpose was the Opus'. However, I still don't find myself spending close to $200 for a powersupply. Would this be good enough? I *plan* on buying all laptop accessories for my optical, and HDD. Although, I'm not sure if my budget will allow all of that

With the powersupply mentioned above, I won't need a Power Inverter, or at least I don't think I will. If I don't, will I nee some sort of regulator to make sure I don't happen to fry any of my PC's components, or is that PSU pretty safe when it comes to surges?

Also, I'm in the market for some sound. I'm thinking 2 10" Subs and an amp, however I do NOT want to go over $200. I don't want my car (or my *** for that matter) to be shaking due to the bass, I just want to be able to feel it, I want my lows to sound good. Do you guys have any ideas? Also, do you know anyone who has made a custom box for a 3rd Gen F-Body (1982-1992 Camaro/Firebird)? I'm thinking about making one, but woulnd't know where to start, any help on this matter would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for your help ahead of time guys, I do appreciate it.

Edit: I just went over what I wrote, and there are plenty of grammatical errors, including tons of run-ons. Sorry, but it's 4:15AM and I can hardly think straight

Have a look at the new M1-ATX psu from the mp3car shop, it is 90W and has good shutdown stuff all built in. There is some discussion of it over on the PSU section.

I'm not 100% sure 90W will do the trick though, or will it?

I have a 91 Firebird and built a custom enclosure for a single 12" woofer. It was built to fit right behind the rear seat on the read deck in front of the trunk. To get proper airspace it sits flush with the top of the rear seat and slants downward toward the trunk. Only problem w/ this is that it is extremely visible in the rear window (probably why some bastard stole it a month ago). Anyway, real simple to build...just used 3/4" MDF, a skil saw and a jig saw. Carpeted it to match. For my carpc, I plan to make an MDF enclosure in the trunk. I'll post pics.

The 200 watt supply that you are looking at is dc-dc but I do not beleive that it regulats you would still need to regulate the power to 12v before the power supply.

You will need something likethis to regulate the power first.

Read up on the ITPS first though I think alot of people were complaning about it.

Nice to see another 3rd Gen vehicle getting ready for the ultimate upgrade.

There are many issues that you will run into,

    - The audio and video on the Via MII 10000 leaves much to be desired, but otherwise it is a good board. The IKEA keybox for a case is a fantastic route to take if you want something semi-prebuilt.
-- The onboard video will not run the native resolution of the Xenarc nor the Luliput screens but does fair quality running Powerstrip at 800x600.
-- The onboard sound will not work for anything other than basic stereo. Yes, it does 5.1, but the quality will suck and the rear channel is about half as loud as the front. I went with the Audigy 2 NX and it sounds fantastic!

    - Spend the extra money on the power supply. The OPUS is what I went with, but be aware that even when the power supply and car are off that you will have power on the 5v USB bus. the forum for details.

    - A sub enclosure for the 3rd Gen Camaro/Firebird is very easy to make, but before you delve into it I would suggest you read the book ‘How to Design and Install High-Performance Car Stereo (S-A Design)’ available on Amazon for around $13. Search the web and some of the 3rd gen Camaro sites and you will find specific instructions on how to construct one.

    - One of the design requirements that I had was to be able to insert a CD/DVD into the drive from the driver’s seat. Unfortunately IDE cables lengths cause a bit of a problem. If you want to put the computer in the back with your stereo equipment you will probably want to go with a slot loading slim line USB drive. Again, for details.

The bottom line best advice is to take your time, do your research, and then make your purchases. And make sure everything works on the bench before the install seems to be one bit of advice everyone makes. I haven’t completed my install yet, but makes sense to me. Good luck and let us know how it goes!

PS - the pics on your previous thread are dead, would love to see them

That snap in needs a regulator as has been mentioned before. I have that and it is a great unit if you get it working with the ITPS board. I would still recommend the Carnetix and the OPUS PS units over any of the rest.

I did this, that MDF make a real heat coffin even for my mobile processor, but the temp still hasnt rissen above 100º F so I'm not too worried. Ill post pictures soon as well. I'm still trying to figure out a better way to build a quickrelease for my lilliput in the front, so thats why i'm holding off on pictures.....but I have a few ideas...just need time to implement them.

BeaverWise ahh, another 3rd gen owner. Love seeing F-Body enthusiasts Anyway, the pictures are down because the webserver is down, and I didn't have the pics saved to my PC. I'm going to have to go and take pics whenever I can and then upload it. Until then, see you guys later. ( I still need money... )
