Noob with Dilema over monitor choice

Hi, I've been hanging around here for a while now as I've been thinking about building a CAR PC for my 2001 VW Golf. I now know prety much what I want and how I want to do it with one exception - the monitor.

I want the monitor to be upfront and not bolted to the dashboard but part of it. I therefore have 2 choices either build one in (with all that cutting, moulding, spray painting etc - not too keen as I'm not the most practical person) or have an indash model. However, I want touchscreen (safer, easier to opperate etc).

I know that the indash touchscreen is much wanted but not yet available and the release has been put back many times by both Xenarc and Lilliput as they have them in development (on their website).

However I want to know whether people think these will be available in the next few months or do I just bite the bullet and get a standard touchscreen. I have an email from Xenarc saying that they have inventory on its way and should be with the public from early Feb (OK it doesn't say the year, but I presume as they have it on the way they mean this year!)

    What do people think??

    DigitalWW have indash Xenarcs

I think the link is digitalww.com try there. They are not motorised (or motorized for you Americans!)

The price is a little steep, but they are worth it...

In-dash motorized VGA has been and will continue to be the elusive animal that many of us are after.

Watch what you say about the availability though... There are some on this forum with ... um... lets say 'extreme feelings' about vaporware.

If you don't care about motorized, you can get a lilliput or xenarc or allbrite, or whatever else is out there without problem. Then you can either put it into a manual in dash mount, or fabricate the dash to fit it without folding out.

Thanks, I've seen the 'extreme feelings' of other members in other posts and who can blame them - motorised in dash touchscreens would be a killer component in any car puter project.

To me as a noob the 'evidence' looks quite hopeful especially when you combine the websites (appearance on www.karputer.co.uk and www.newision.com) with my email from Xenarc (saying that the indash touchscreen models are on their way and should be available early Feb).

Am I just being too noobish (if that's a word) and this evidence has been around for a while and I've just not been arround to spot it?

Assuming that motorised / OEM indash options are way off I have looked at the digitalww models on indash touchscreens (ready built) and am keen however does anyone know how much UK Customs is likely to hit me for if I import one (probably the Xenarc based one)?

Customs basicaly hit your for VAT on any shipment that costs more than 18, the courier company pays it, then adds on an "admin fee" often up to 20 and extracts that from you before handing over the goods.

However I beleive that Xenarc and Gain are in fact the same make, so you can buy one from lintix.com and avoid all that hassle

Thanks for the info, do you know this from experience or are you just a clever person - I thought there would be an import duty element (e.g. 4 or 5%) that's put on before the VAT element . I hadn't thought about the admin fees tho' - must figure those in as well should I decide to import.

I am particularly interested in the indash model that digitalww do, however as now xenarc now have the indash model on their website (URL=http://www.mp3car.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=40689] http://www.mp3car.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=40689[/URL]) I may wait until LinITX or another UK distrib get their hands on some; soon if xenarc are to be believed from their email. However I've also just seen that digitalww now have a fully motorised one based on the Xenarc inards (Fully Motorized In-Dash VGA Touch Screen LCD) the choice gets harder (tho $500 shipped to the UK and then 17.5% added is bad enough let alone admin fees and duty - if there is any would be a fair bit)

From experience, though it's been a while and I forgot about the import duty.
A full description of the costs can be found here but in my experience what you end up getting charged is completely random.

One thing I can say with certanity is that if you send the goods by standard post you stand a far chance of HMCE not even looking at it or bothering to charge you, unless the item has a huge flourescent pink "EXPENSIVE COMPUTER GEAR" advert on the top. If it is sent by a courier such as UPS or DHL you will always get hit for customs. DHL also have the most expensive admin fees, I only used them once and the breakdown was as follows:

    1 Laserdisc (remember those?) - 20
    Customs fees - 16
    DHL Admin fee - 20
    Total - 56

Other times I've had huge boxes of videos and DVDs sent and they opened them but couldn't be bothered charging, they also cannot be bothered rewinding videos after checking to make sure they're not illegal pr0n and I have had one case where a replacement DVD was sent in a cover-cd style envelope which they opened with a knife and put a huge scratch across the DVD.

Sorry if I'm sounding overly negative, it is a gamble but you can often save money, especially at the current exchange rates!

The best way to do it is to get the seller to send it standard post and mark it as having no commercial value on the customs form, many online retailers do this anyway, however this is technically illegal (their problem, not yours)

Cheers for the info, looking at another thread (too lazy to post which one at the moment - fri night & bout to go out someone budgets ~24% which would mean the new motorised VGA from digitalww would cost about 350-390 even with the aweful state of the US dollar (with nearly 1GBP to 2USD it's no wonder my employer is struggling)
