    Need Help With Cold Cathodes

    Didn't know where to post this, or even if this is the right site to post this on. But you all seem good with cars, So I was wondering, I have this cold cathode setup for my computer, and we all know that the comp and the car both use 12V, so can i just hardwire into my cig lighter?
    If so, I noticed that there was 2 wires going to it, i am guessing one is ground and the other +12.
    Any guides or help would be great, thx a lot.

    if you connect it straight to the car its going to get 14+ volts when the car is running, not to mention voltage spikes and dips when you are starting the car. This *may* blow it up i dont know how resistant they would be to that kind of abuse

    Are you trying to wire it in your computer? If so I have cold cathodes in my computer and they just plug into the power supply within' the computer. Why would you need to wire it to your cigarette lighter?

    I have one running off my car's 12v....it works fine for cold cathodes

    yeah, cold cathodes are just fine being hooked directly up to the car battery, i've had one on my sub box that's been hooked up like that for about 5-6 months now with no problems.

    And you all have an inverter right?
    You don't just wire it directly to the batterie right?
    And no, I don't have a computer in my car.

    Right. You keep the inverter that comes with the CCFL. You do not wire the tube directly to the battery. You can get away without a regulator. I don't know how long it will last, but trust me, they are a lot more resilient than they let you believe.

    I have been trying to design a CCFL dimmer circuit, and have been treating one of my tubes quite badly. Ramping voltage, DC "sine" waves, intentionally spiking it to about 15 volts, all sorts of horrid things. I have it running under my desk right now, going from about 5 percent brightness to about 90 percent. Its really a cool effect, but it can give you seizures after a while....

    lol, thats great.
    So I wire the inverter which is connected to the CC to the batterie?
    Do you think I could just use the cig lighter? I don't really wanna go through the firewall and all that if I don't have too.
