Sad to say it's true. Unless you go the illegal route...

their are places online that sell OEM copies of xp. they usually end up being cheaper than a full retail copy.

If it's the newer XP with that requires activation, then theoretically, yes, you need another copy. If it doesn't use activation, and you're just refering to the product key, then it will work on more than one computer.

    OR

If it requires activation, you install the same XP on your car PC, call up Microsoft's activation line, tell them you just upgraded your machine and you need to re-activate (and tell 'em you don't have the net and can't do it online). Apparently the activation code is derived from your hardware specs, and sometimes even certain upgrades can require re-activation, even if you're not doing a fresh OS install.

Legally, yes you can only install your one copy of windows xp on one computer AT A TIME. If you want to go the legal route and save some money, you can do the OEM versions (you usually have to buy it with hardware) or an upgrade version (assuming you have a legal copy of an older windows os) or you can buy an academic version (if you are a student).

I upgrade my computers continually, and reinstall windows a lot (at least it feels that way) and I have had to call in to activate a few times (they were legitamate activations, I swear). The phone activation is pretty painless, but I think you have to answer their magic question properly. When they ask you how many other computers this copy of XP is installed on, answer 0.

Other than that you can find some illegal copies floating around, but they usually have blacklisted product ids which will make it difficult to download/install updates if you need them.

OK. All I have is the disk that came with my dell. SO I guess I will put it on the car pc and call up windows and hook it up.

most dell xp cd's will not install on a non-dell system

I have tried it, and it has builtin checks to make sure it's a dell machine it's being installed onto.
