sorry to post this and bother you guys but...
My computer (not in car, just a laptop) has been crashing like crazy.
When I start it normally, it loads up normally and launches all my start up programs. As soon as i try to excute a program, however, the screen turns black and it then displays a white on blue screen saying that "something has gone wrong, if you made any changes that probably messed up your computer".
I booted into safe mode, and ran a virus check on C:\WINNT (I had recieved a message that there was somthing wrong in there but Symantec could not quarentine it). I found the virus, a trojan (located in C:\WINNT\isrvs\sysupd.dll) and successfully deleted it.
I restarted in normal mode and guess what, it crashed!! I then tried to do system restore, and reset the BIOS default settings. I am now in safe mode with networking.
Oh yeah, my computer is running Windows XP Pro, service pack two.
Thanks in advance,
Tyler

-dont know where windows disc is
-just checking if there was a better way around it
Congratulations, you just got screwed by Microsoft. Well, you'll need to buy Windows again.. Or if you have your CD-Key you can download or burn a copy and use your CD-Key. Even if you can get around it this time, you will need it in the future. BTW, this should be placed in the "off topic" forum. Oh, if your Laptop is only a few years old, there is a good chance you have a windows installer already installed on your harddrive in a different partition. When you system boots, does it display a message after the POST but before Windows starts up. There is usually a button sequence you hit and it will take over from there.
llama--sorry about the misplacement, I really didn't know where to put it. sorry to sound like a retard, but what is the POST?
Re-installing windows in this case, should be the last option... I love it when poeple bring thier machines to "Technicians" and they take 10 minutes to diagnose the machine and if it looks "to complicated" to fix they re-install the OS... really are they doing you a survice ??
Here's my advice..
Boot to safe mode, COPY the registry... Then run MSconfig, Disable all services but Cryptography & Windows installer and also disable all Startup applications... If the laptop can still go online.. use an online virus scan such as trend micro (something other than the virus scan that you already have)
I'd like to know if your virus scan is upto date, I'd also like to know what OS your machine is running.... (By the looks its Windows 2000) I'd also like to know if your OS is upto date with service packs... and what were you doing the day before it crashed ??? Did you change anything ?? new hardware ?? anything like that ?? Also.. run a chkdsk /f if it finds some bad sectors keep running it until it passes flawlessly a few times.. report back when you get a chance.. or PM me.
Progress [I will seriously never be done!]

If it is a newer laptop, they usually have a partition that has the repair tools on it. Juat look for the screen when you reboot. Walk through the steps. They are very simple as they are meant for the not so saavy. This will repair your windows installation and you won't lose any files/programs. Takes about half an hour.
