MEGA Newbie, Total Beginner!

Hi, I'm really new to this thing, but i've got some idea of what i want. (like most) i want a pc in m car with a touch screen tft thats motorised so can fold away so no one can nick it. Should i get a shuttle, stick it in the boot and run vga cable round and make a really long dvd drive cable and stick the dvd drive in the glove comp? or try and stuff envry thing into the glove comp?

Can someone advise of power etc, basically the lot. I know there is lots of newbie faq's but none really tie everything up. PLease just some start up tips, like what to get to make it start up when ignition is on. PS i'm on a fairly tight budget

this isn't a hobby where you can just throw a bunch of shiot together and throw it in yoru car and be done with it....it requires a bunch of research and a bit more time....

take it easy and look around....there are threads pertaining to your questions

there is no motorized vga touch screen on the market....though there is talk of one, I wont hold my breath (and I'm sure there are a bunch of others who will agree with me here) till I see it..

shuttle is too simple for my taste, but it works great for some people, here, would be an excelent time to go get a bag of popcorn and a coke and sit and read....because only you will be able to make that decision for yourself on something like where to place the computer and which ones to go with.

on power....there is an ENTIRE forum dedicated to power....go read it, where that popcorn and coke come in handy again

the reason those FAQs don't tie anything up, as you put it, is that there is no perfect psu for EVERYONE out there, again, read and do some research, you will have to part together what you want and what will work for you.

On the startup tips.....that might just get you hard core flamed in a few minutes here....

there are like a BAGILLION threads and a lot of products out there that cover this....JUST READ and ye shall find the answers

on a fairly tight budget! who isn't?

You'll need to be more specific. I don't know what kind of car you have. I don't know what your main goal for the system is so I don't know if you would prefer the system to be in your glove compartment or trunk. I see you mention getting a Shuttle. Does that mean you have decided on the main system?

Everyone is on a tight budget. Does tight mean $400 USD or $1500 USD or what?

Many people want a suggested system with all the parts already nailed down for them. Since these are custom installs, it doesn't work that way. However, if you still want advice on soup to nuts what to buy, then buy what I did. It worked for me and will probably work for you:

Buy this Instead of the monitor there buy either a Lilliput or a Xenarc.

If my system doesn't meet your needs, try searching on the following terms:

"Startup controller" - in the Power Supplies forum
"VGA extension" - in the General Hardware forum
"USB extension" or "IDE extension" in the overall search box

Go to the Show Off Your Project forum and search for your car. It's very possible someone has already done it.

Be prepared to spend a lot of time researching and reading to figure out the details of your system. And when you ask a question, be specific so as to not have to repeat and add detail.
