    Zx2 Install Suggestions

Hey guys I'm a n00b here but have been reading some from the forums. Here's my idea for the install, Computer will consist of Antec 220watt micro-atx case, 256 pc 2100, Asrock micro-atx board, amd duron 1.8, 80gig hd, dvd rom. I am adding a holux gps usb reciever and microsoft streets and trips 2005, along with XM pcr. I have a 400 watt inverter for power (for now I know I should get the opus but that just isn't in the cards right now, but I am planning on it eventually). Now here comes the part where I really need suggestions. I dont know how many of you have seen the other install post with the Zx2 on it but he just had his monitor sitting there, thats a little to ghetto for me so I'm going to mount it either in the dash or down in the bottom part below the dash. I still plan on keeping my kenwood head unit, its just a matter of where I am going to put everything. I am getting a 7" lilliput. The dash is round so its going to be fun and if I install it in the center part I have one that I used for my cd player that I could cut and make to fit the monitor, but I would have to move the climate controls with it.
In dash kit So if I run that up top Ill use the center part I cut out for the cd player down at the bottom. Let me know what you all think, and if you have any other suggestions as far as any of that goes, I know this is all probably confusing, so here are some pics (still dont have my kenwood head unit in, because im waiting for the pc and all). Yep, that was my installation in a ZX2. You will definately need to do some serious fabrication to get the monitor to fit in the center console (oval). Then you will most likely need to relocate the temperature controls. THen find out where you are going to relocate your headunit.

In other words -- a lot of work...

I just ditched my mATX case and have a SFF computer ready to go back inside the car. For it will sit in the back seat floor area. You may run into some issues when installig an mATX case in the trunk -- stabilty and fitment issues, unless you are going to gut out the case and bolt/fix the carputer to the back seat panel inside of the trunk.

    Best of luck,

    Steve

I was looking into size of montor issue, and I think that if you try you can squeeze a 7" one in just above the temp controls. If not than this install should be fun :-). the head unit I think would fit down in that bottom part below the oval, but I will have to move the wires down. I dont think I quite understand the computer issue you were talking about with the back seat, could you explain further. Thanks

The case was too tall. It would work if I had the seat almost all the way up front and the seat back almost vertical. If not the computer will be tilted towards the back. So, I had to go with a SFF barebone. As for the trunk. The case almost did not fit -- too tall. Then there is the issue with keeping the thing stable. Building a platform to hold the pc and not getting to the spare tire.

Is that your head unit way down by the gear shift? If so, I'd rip everything out above the temperature controls. If you can get it to fit in the round black part, great. Otherwise, let it stick up and bondo the overhang into the dash.

The other option is to put it right where the vent is, but that's a lot of custom fab.

I see yah I'm going with a mini-atx antec case so I think it will be alrght, as far as what to do with shock absorbancy, I think I might do something with foam.

I am planning on putting the head unit down by the gearshift and doing the install above the temperature controls, if they dont fit....I think I'll cry I really dont want to do custom fab of a piece for the dash. Thanks for the replys guys.

See here's the deal bud, I would like to do just that, and possibly go out and buy a porshe but I'm a poor college student and that just wont be possible until I graduate, or at least get a job. But thanks for the suggestion.

I seriously don't think any 7" monitor will fit in the oval while leaving the climate controls where they are. Not enough room for the controls anyway. I don't know if you have seen "Starship"'s ZX2. The one with the removable rocket pod on the trunk deck? He has a real custom dash. For other possible ideas:

If you plan on not using your donut spare in the trunk, you could make a more solid/stable platform for your computer case to stand on. In my case (pun not intended), the case was too big and I did keep my spare. Not to mention that the fiberboard cover is flimsy. And the Mini/Micro ATX case was just too big to fit in the back, that's why I got a SFF computer now.

Have you checked my updated pics on TeamZX2.com??? I have posted some there as well as in the "show off you project" forum here.
