Quickest Way to Move Files

Hi, I have about 8 gigs of stuff on my computer that I want to move to my computer in my car. I have a wireless network, but even when Im parked outside my house, it has like barely any signal, so it can't even copy any files. I can't move the computer inside because it is connected to my car and everything. Currently, I am using my Sandisk 1 gb MP3 player to move stuff over, but its taking FOREVER!! Are there any quicker routes? Thanks!

Thing I would do is get a cheap USB enclosure that you can put a spare harddrive into. Now you have quite a bit of space to move the files over. If your mobo supports USB 2.x then your in luck, make sure you buy a usb 2.x enclosure for your spare harddrive. If it only supports 1.x then well, its going to be pretty damn slow.

Other thing you can do is run a REALLY LONG cable from your router to your car, but thats usually not feasable.

Burn a couple of DVD's?

you then allso have a backup copy of your MP3's

100Base-T ethernet would be much, much faster than wireless. You'll be fine with a long ethernet cable - unless your caris more than 200m from your house.

Another factor is going to be the speed of your hard disk drives - even if the data is transferred quickly, the car drive will only be able to write so fast.

If you are having problems with your wireless you probably need to look @ your wireless AP and/or the wireless NIC in your computer.

I used to have your problem when I was using my D-Link wireless router. It owuld connect, but would time out on transfers sometimes or just transfer real slowly.

Now I use Linksys' WRT54G Wireless router and one of their USB wireless G NIC's. I can still transfer files at 54mbps from my neighbors driveway across the street.

Why not go buy a cross-over ethernet cable and directly link the two? If it's a laptop, the cable needn't be that long. And if it's a desktop, bring the thing to the nearest window and plug in there.

My HD is in a removable caddy. When I need to transfer files I grab the HD and plug it into my desktop, then it's just drag and drop.

you could add a antenna in your car for better range and even maybe add a antenna at your AP...

Can you move your wireless access point to where you can get a good signal (like near the window)? If you get a long ethernet cable, you could temporarily station it where you can get good reception.

I know this is no help now, but on carputer number two, I suggest you make the computer easily removable.
