headlights on = lights dim = problem?

Hey all. For as long as I can remember, whenever I activate the headlights on my 99 Camry LE L4, my dashboard illumination and digital clock will go dim. Dim enough to be difficult to read in the daytime, but still bright enough to be clearly readable at night. I'm planning to install a second battery (Yellow Optima) and use a inverter to power my carputer, and I'm worried the lights dimming could be a sign of a strain on my power system already. Comments/suggestions?

isn't there some kind of wheel/switch (don't know what it's call) that let you control how dim or bright your interior light is? maybe you have that all the way down, that's why it's not so bright.

Yup, my car does the same. You can adjust the brightness of the dash lights, but even the maximum is dimmer than without the lights on.

Why would that be a feature? I guess they assume when you have your lights on... it's dark and turn down the interior lights to make them easier to read?
