Strange windows XP problem!

For some reason or other i cant open ny program using its shortcut?

I have to go into it's actual program file and use the original icon.

None of the icons in the start menu work either???

Puzzled me!

Should read "any program" not "ny program"!!!

You've got something really messed up, then.
It could be something hosed int eh shell (EXPLORER.EXE).
There could be something screwy in your registry.
You could have some malware running that's preventing the .lnk (shortcut) files from doing their thing.

Suggestions:
Reboot. It's Windows, after all!

Root out any malware with a good AV program (AVG has a completely free version) and a spyware remover to make certain that's not the problem.
Reinstall Winblows, if all else fails.

And just to rule out any silly errors, make sure that the shortcuts actually point to the files that they are supposed to.

you didn't happen to be messing with regedit?

I managed to nuke whatever makes shortcuts work once! You could try copying the reg entries from another pc over.
