    specs for a carputer--too weak?

so i was considering getting this PC from my friend for real cheap. I got an 80gig hard drive so I'd be fine for media. Other than that, should I try for something more powerful? I don't necessarially need GPS right at the moment, so for multimedia functions, is this enough?

    SPECS:

Operating System Microsoft Windows 98 SE
    CPU Type Intel Celeron-A, 500 MHz (7.5 x 67)
Motherboard Name Intel Atlanta AL440LX (2 ISA, 4 PCI, 1 AGP, 3 DIMM)
    Motherboard Chipset Intel 82440LX
    System Memory 192 MB (SDRAM)
    Video Adapter Xpert 128
    3D Accelerator ATI Rage128 Pro
    Multimedia:
Audio Adapter Creative SB PCI128 (Ensoniq ES1370) Sound Card

    Peripherals:
    USB Device Cruzer Mini

would appreciate the advice and also if anyone wanted to throw out a suggested price I should pay?

    thanks

It should work for music playback. I'd think that it would work for video, too. Maybe a little more RAM.

specifically 32 bones? any reason? like did you get some sort of price analisys software? or is it just off the top of your head? Either works

But as far as all your recommendations, if I'm willing to save up a bit more, would you suggest a Pentium 3 1.0 ghz or something around there instead? like, if I'm gonna get a Carputer, get one that'll do what I want?

i agree that it may need a bit more ram. and yes it will work for music playback but if you are trying to run video i suggest no little than an 800 mhz processor but personally i prefer at least a 1Ghz.

Id get it and replace the celeron with a 533 or higher P3 chip I got my chip of ebay for 2.50

I have a P3 533Mhz and it works fine for win XP, video, gps, mp3, everything

You have to think about the power supply harder if you start putting faster processors in as they use a hell of a lot more.

Also I would definatly have a min of 256 ram
    System:
    256Mb, PIII 533 on a Hyph01 PCI sized mobo (Lan/Sound/GFX)
    M1-ATX PSU
    250GB Hdd

    USB:
    Haicom GPS
    Belkin Wireless

    Case:
Installed in an old NTL box, (best thing for it)

    Screen:
    LinITX 7"

I wouldn't dump too much more money into it. Start-up may not be the fastest but it should run relatively well. If you already have the parts there is no reason not to give it a shot. If you do things right you should get your whole system working before you install it in the car. You will know if the board/CPU is enough at this point.

If it turns out you need a little more juice just buy a faster CPU and possibly more ram. CPUs under 1ghz can be had for around USD $20.
