How is this carputer?

Hello all,
I'm a newbie, so bear with me. How is this CPU? I want something not to extravagent, just something simple and cost-efficient(aka cheap) for my first carputer. Any comments would be great.

HP Carputer Car-PC
Intel Celeron 1GHZ (1000mhz)
Ram - 256mb (2 Slots total, 1 available)
Hard Drive - 40gb
CD-ROM Drive
Intel 3D Direct AGP Video
4 USB Ports, 2 the in the front and 2 in the back
1 Serial Port
1 Monitor Port
1 PS2 Keyboard Port
1 PS2 Mouse Port
1 Printer Port
1 3com 10/100 LAN
1 Audio In
1 Audio Out
1 Microphone In (can use for voice activation)
Stereo Audio Out
Ideal for Networking.
Compatible: Win9x/ME/NT/2000/XP

I primarily want this carputer to run GPS. I have a Sony 7" flip out and want to hook this up to it. How would I go about converting the monitor port to a RCA output?

Ugh. And what Motherboard does this pc have? You just read those specs off of the Hp in front of you, huh.

ing in these forums to get an idea of what other people are doing (in terms of alternatives to the mainstream min-atx's)
That system will be bulky and power hungry, and on top of that not the best for performance. 512mb ram is a minimum for windows IMO. Check out the store here @ mp3car.com and look at how affordable those options really are, because you may build this system and find that it doesnt do all that you wanted, and was therefor not really "cost-efficient," even though it was "cheap."

I've had a couple of those HP e-pcs that you are looking at and I'll tell you they are DIRT slow.... you'd be better off with an ITX based solution.

Very well. Well, here's my situation. I do not know very much about computers so building it myself is outta the question. How is the Carputer sold on this site? I am looking at the:
MP3Car Custom Car Computer (3688)
VIA VIA EPIA M10000 Mini-ITX Mainboard
2.5" HD 60gb
Teac 24x CDROM
512 RAM DDR PC-2700
OS-I have a XP cd
M1-ATX power supply

Is this everything I need? Will I need to purchase any additional components? Thanks for all your input!

I fully expect that you will have all sorts of problems that you won't be able to figure out because you don't know much about computers. Everything from hardware troubleshooting to software configuration and tweaking it to your liking.
This isn't a hobby with lots of ready-made parts that you can just plug in and go.

Sorry, let me rephrase my words. I know a decent amount about computers, just not to the extent as most of you.

I'm just not very proficient at building cpus. Installing HD, CD-Rom drives, and memory is stuff I can do, it's just getting all the parts and putting it altogether from the beginning is what I am not good at. Software, etc. is not an issue though.

Pay no attention to the noob haters... For a first system this is perfectly fine. I am using a compaq laptop for crap sake. P3 733 and it run windows XP fine. If it doesnt work the way you want it, you will quickly tire of it and begin obtaining parts needed for a more up to date system. But at that point, you will be educated in the ways of the mp3car padawan. Just remember.. If you are someone who gives up easy.. then dont bother to start this project... cause it never works exactly as you planned unless you are very lucky! or very rich

Take a look at my system - I'm running a Celeron 1Ghz, with 256mb ram and the onboard video. Yes, it is power hungry. I run XP and sometimes with GPS, and movies Running, it get's a little *****y.

I'd advise a premade carputer - or just wait a few weeks - look on ebay and here in the "classifieds" forum and buy someone's premade setup. Don't worry about the *****ing, someone around here will always help.
