noob here, have some questions about parts needed for carputer install...

ok, i have the computer... easy part done.

i know im going to need a flipout monitor as well. im also going to need about a 500watt power invertor directly to the batery.

here is my question. i own a 4 door 1996 toyota avalon. im going to mount the computer in the trunk. i need to know how to make audio and video come out of the computer and go into the back of whatever head unit i choose. the computer has a gforce 4 ti4600 or something, cant remember exactly. basically, what parts do i need to get this done?

so far i KNOW i need:
power invertor 10-20% bigger then rated power on computer
indash flipout video screen
misc wires to hook up power invertor

and thats all i can think of. i dont know what wires i need to run audio and video to back of head unit of flipout screen.

sorry for the long post, i did search but couldnt find what i was looking for. thanks in advance for the help.

If your head unit has an auxillary in You get a cable from virtually any electronics store around that has a line in jack, and then the red and white RCA cables on the other end. If you're unsure the Line in jack is like a microphone connector.

Read the sticky in the Newbie forum "How to get sound from your pc to speakers". It details lots of ways to do it.

You realize that the quality of the video on a headunit screen will be awful, right? They use video LCD's, not VGA computer quality screens. You will find the text below 18 points to be fuzzy and Windows will be essentially unreadable. You will also not be able to control the PC from the screen.

no, i didnt realize any of this. im a total noob. i know how to get the sound from computer to back of the headunit, thats easy. im running the same type setup on my desktop at my house. however, i dont know how to get video. ive read most of the sticky's, none really gave the info i was looking for.

what does VGA stand for? also, how much do those run? i know its gonna be about 600 for a decent flip out monitor.

The basic difference is that Video is analog. It's an NTSC (in the US) signal - what you your television can display. This is 525 scan lines horizontally and between 400-600 vertically. Contrast that to a 1024 X768 display that you see on your computer monitor.

You get the picture. The screen size is the same but the resolution is much higher on VGA. Also, VGA is digital, meaning it lights up each pixel individually. Video does not, so the circuitry is not as precise. This causes fuzzines in the display and is the reason that VGA can display much smaller text more clearly.

THis is right off the mp3car store. You will also find that many people dont even use a head unit anymore. YOu can just take the sound straignt from the PC to an amp which in turn pwoers your speakers

i have no desire to purchase an amp. i dont like loud stereo systems or anything like that. not to mention, my car only has 4 inch speakers all around factory. i have replaced them with sony xplod's, but thats about as much aftermarket stero stuff besides a head unit my car is getting. no subs, no amp.

thanks for all the help too. one more question, how do i connect the video? is it the same way as the speaker hook up?

ok, well i checked out those monitors and im ok with the price, but they have no rca inputs or anything. this is going to be too much of a hassle for me to mess with and probably end up costing over 1/4 what my car is worth. sorry for wasting your time, im just going to scrap this idea.

If you get a vga lcd, you just plug it into your comp. If it isnt Vga, youre gonna need a video card with tv out, and the quality is going to be worse.

what in the bloody hell for? unless you plan on running the latest nVidia video card so yow can play half life 2 while you drive, that's super overkill.

what is it lately with people throwing systems in their cars that are way over powered, way too big, and amssive power hogs.

there's a much more efficient way to approach all this.
