Anybody mess with car air vents?

So I know quite a bit about computers (why I thought it would be cool to put one in my car) but I don't know anything about cars. Where the head unit and things are in my car seems really low on the dash, and I don't want to have to look down to adjust stuff on my monitor (for safety reasons, and just plain annoyance). Farther up my dash is the part with all the car air vents are and it seems just about eye level, exactly where I want my screen. Can you move these vents? Is it possible to move them lower on the dash?

    Thanks a lot

search on google for your cars forum (example: "mazda 6 forum")to better understand your car and how to pull things apart and everything else. I know how you feel I dont know anything about cars.

Anything is possible, it is just a matter of cost. It might help if you posted more info (AKA type of car).

I would say most likely not. Some HVAC system are vacuum sealed. But you could always block them off..that would seem like the easiest way to go. Like said though, with time and $$ you could move them.

I don't see whay uou cant move the vents. YOu will normally have some ducting behind the dash that the vents in the facia slot into and the directiona nd vent close functions will be attached to this facia part. All you would have to do is take out the ducting and fit some wide flexible hose (like they use in racing car ducting and in buildings) and re-route the ducts to your new vents. Jsu tmake sure the system is free from leaks around the joins and if you decide to remove the vents completely then block the duct off or it wonr function properly.

An alternative is to remove the vents and then mount top vents intot he top of your dash (the round ones that you can buy and you just fold them up to blow or flatten them to close - i have seen them on performance cars and ont he new Lotus Elise). Then all you have to do is tap down into the vent ducting through your dash and seal it off with some firbreglass or something. You could even jsut make some vent shtat flick up out the top of your dash.

I had the same problem with my chevy S-10. I couldn't mount my stereo flush because it would hit the air duct. SO.......I pulled out my heat gun and melted the F#*@er. I guess i could have moved it somewhere else. Right now I blocked off the whole thing so i could put in a video screen for my puter.(900mhz Pentium) Definetly look into before melting it down like me . Its too late for me to go back now.
