usb soundcard for 2.1 (music only)

Well i did search but it seems that all of the threads go off topic pretty quickly when the soundcard being talked about isn't a soundblaster card.

I have a relatively small cabin area in my car, no rear speakers, cdt 6.5" components up front, 12" image dynamics sub in the back, and an xtant amp to be installed shortly. A via epia m10000 with m1-atx is driving the whole system.

I am in the process of a system redesig and it's going to require me to get a usb soundcard or possibly a low profile pci card. I very dont plan on watching dvd's (possibly on occassion when i have a passenger on a long trip or if I ever go to some car shows) so i am interested in the best solution for 2.1 sound. I can't find many soundcards with output voltages about 2volts and I would rather not get a line driver or bump up the gain on my amp. does anyone have any suggestions for a great soundcard?

I heard that sb cards are great but they are focused on gaming so I've been looking elsewhere. So far I've found these two:

    audiotrak:

    maya ex7 usb:
    http://audiotrak.net/mayaex7.htm

prodigy 7.1 lt (not sure if it'll fit in my case yet):
    http://audiotrak.net/prodigy7.1LT.htm

has anyone had any experience with these? Are there any out there that are better for my application?

    Thanks in advance

I've heard the Maya is pretty good. I have a soundblaster live usb and used it for a while as 2 channel before I installed the carpc and it played music well. now in the car i found that it lacks a little bass but that may be because of my components, plus you already have a subwoofer (i don't yet) which solves the bass problem. as for bumping up the gain on your amp, I have a 600W kenwood amp an the gain is at around 20-25% maybe 30% and I have never needed to turn the carpc volume higher than 50% and at 50% it is loud....in the rare cases that I want it really loud i set the carpc to around 65-70% and it is plenty loud for people all around to give me the evil eye ....anyways just my $02, this topic could get a little controversial!

i'm not sure if the case will allow a riser, i'll double check though. the other issue with the sb is that i'm not completely happy with it. it does a better job with the kx driver but that increases the time it takes before my front end launches.

That's why i'm back to looking into new soundcards. Is it even worth getting a high end soundcard for just 2.1 music?

from what i've read the kx drivers only work on pci cards anyway (haven't dug into this though)......what I would recommend is doing some testing with your setup, perhaps you could get somebody to lend you a sb and compare it with your onboard, or maybe get a cheap one on ebay, I bought mine new for less than $50. I think the big difference between a high end sound card and your on board will be bass management and if you are not too concerned about movies (or gaming) you are not really going to use all the perks of a high end sound card anyway

great idea, i'll try to see if anyone will let me test out some soundcards at the next cali meet.

actually, i wonder how the onboard sound piped to signal processor (audiocontrol unit) would sound.... more research

i think i may go this route.

onboard sound out -> audio control 24xs -> amp

this will give me 5 volt out and some other nifty features like time alignment and 24db/crossover
