actually, my moms old olsmobile was perfectly drivable with the parking brake (i hope thats the same as an e-brake. im not a bloody european like most here ) on. one day we were out running errands and then all of a sudden we hear this sound like something is dragging on the road. we pull into a parking lot, set the parking brake and check it out. the muffler was dangling. jimmy rigged it till we got back home. little did we know was that the parking brake was still on the whole way home.

In my area it is legal, as long as you are displaying a backup cmera, GPS, or static information. Any type of video is illegal, as it should be.
Is this where the witty comment goes?

The center console is in view of the driver. If you have a device in your center console playing a video while you're driving, that's illegal, plain and simple.
Argue the logic of the passenger all you want. Argue with the cop that pulls YOU over and gives YOU the ticket. Better yet, try to get the passenger to pay that ticket.

If you don't see the danger, then you need to go back to Driver's Ed, son. Let me know when you're on the highway so I can stay the **** off.

If you want to get the straight dope on the legality of it, walk into your local precinct and ask the cops. Better yet, ask a traffic lawyer. I'm certain that either will give you the answer free of charge.
Have you looked in the FAQ yet?

You drive with your ebrake up? Nice way to destory the brakes. For me, the ebake is only good for 2 things: stopping the car from moving while its parked, and for locking up the tires

I am with the concensus here: watching video while driving is not acceptable. I have no problem if my passengers want to watch something, I can accept the risk in terms of legalities. I would refuse, however, to even glance at the screen for any reason, just as I do while carputing in general. (enter navivoice for you pc users!) I refuse to accept the risk of harm to others (and me!) just for a little in-car entertainment.

SIDE STORY: My buddy had a half *** carputer back in the day (laptop connected to a portable dvd player) that he sported for long trips. (so he didnt have to change cd's constantly) Driving across the state in the middle of the night once, we (the passengers) decided to watch the matrix. (nothing else to freakin do) Even though there was not a single other car on the Interstate, I wouldnt let him watch for even a sec while he drove. I had the player angled away from him, but at one point when I wasnt really paying attention he was craning his neck to watch.... I snapped at him to "watch the ******* road, mofo!" just as we were passing over an overpass. At that very point of distraction he was swerving off the road and came within 5ft of smashing into the guardrail at 75mph. /rant (sorry)
This is why I am ok with MY passengers watching a video, because I know the consequences of even trying to catch a peek.... so I wont. I wish everyone had some sense of the gravity of focus (or lack of) during driving... especially my mom, who is a better bird-watcher on the road than she is at home.
    Carputer status: [-*---------]
    Im thinking laptop...

Basic law regarding this, in the US, is that there can be no video in view from the drivers seat. The passengers are more than welcome to watch/play/whatever, but it CANNOT be viewable from the drivers seat.

    No ifs/ands/buts....
