Ever just wish you never installed a carputer

Before I go and spend a grand on something I dont have personal experience with ( I have done it before spending money on a 6800GT (when my 5900xt was fine, a 3200xp when my 2500barton was fine) I want to know if anyone has regretted there purchase as just a spur of the moment splurge. Fuel consumption would be nice to see, but mostly i just want it for my 55gb mp3 collection and divx movies\dvds and a mame32 game like mortal kombat or super street fighter 2. Navigation I may hook up later as I dont really need it as I put 18k miles a year on my car but go nowhere new :-)
Gimme some feedback if you get time thanks.

Do it or I will come up to Toledo from Columbus and kick your ***, steal your money, and buy all the stuff for you so you can put it all together

Seriously though, I put a lot of effort into researching and all, I don't regret starting out.

It really is a one time (albeit large) investment...if you want to add functionality, 95% of the time all you'll have to do is install the software...

A carputer is for people who not only like computers, but ppl who like to CUSTOMIZE...dont like the way your OS looks? change the colors. Dont like the interface? Change the front-end. Want to play a music file when the car (and computer) start up? go into sound settings. Want to crossfade your songs? Specify the settings in winamp. Dont like winamp? Get something else!

I could go on and on with thousands of these "dillemas" that we have here, but it turns out that there is almost always a solution. Try to find these abilities in a $2000 clarion touchscreen DVD player (which by the way, does NOT come with a 55gb music collection or DiVX movies )

Exactly. Those ricers and rich kids who run out and drop 2 grand of their parents money on a Kenwood or Pioneer LCD have no balls at all. My setup will look just as good if not better than theirs, be half as cheap, and do 5x more.

    :-)

I like winamp just fine, so it should do everything but dvds unless they do dvds as well, so the frontends are pretty stable? What resolution are these front ends running at or is it just massive icons and text sizes? For some reason im scared of a front end on windows.

Try not to think of it as a front end to windows, instead look at it as a front end to Winamp that runs full screen. The majority of stuff you are going to be doing is either music or movies.

The res on most screens is 800x480, so that will limit your choices on vid cards (unless you want to join the "quest for 800x480" with the EPIA)

Install FrodoPlayer and MediaCar on your machine at home. It's not going to hurt it, and you can use the mouse like you would a touchscreen to play with the interface. It will get you more comfortable with the different interfaces and give you move of an idea of any softwares that you may have to buy.

I have only one problem with installing my computer in my car.... I'm overwhelmed.....
Not with the project, the install, the tinkering..... I'm happy with that...or I was. Now that everything is running, I don't have anything to do but drive and enjoy... so here is my list of complaints....

    1. My drive isn't long enough now. I want more frickin' drive time.
    2. I don't know where to start to listen... I have so much music in the form of Mp3s or XM radio, I have a hard time choosing what to listen to.
    3. My fiancee keeps playing country music.....(mental note: block country music on XM).
    4. Answering questions about why I would want this.....
    5. Answering questions about how much it would cost to do this.....for someone else. (I will not do tech support for someone elses car because they downloaded weather bug). Ignorance costs a lot of money.

all i have to say is when my friend showed me his about $3000 indash mp3/dvd player forgot brand name oh yeah he had touchscreen too!! man he thought he was coooool.

Then I showed him my car pc, with indash TOUCHSCREEN, DVD player (as a matter of fact, any fromat player), which can hold up to 120 GB of information, AND GPS...plus lots more +++

needless to say he and everyone there seeing it for the first time was speechless!!!

Plus it makes me feel like it adds like 20 points to my IQ :-)
