    Monitor

I've been looking through the forums getting as much info as I can and had a quick question on monitors. From the information I read, I would need a monitor that supports VGA input for the display to be legible. However, is there a way to use a regular monitor and use some kind of converter/cable to change it to VGA? I got this monitor for free was wondering if there's any way I could use it to display the computer screen properly. Sorry if it's been answered but I couldn't find any concrete information through the search. TIA for any information.

MaleBuffy - Sorry, I will never ask a question again until I've read through each and every thread found on this forum.

The topic of how crappy NTSC (composite) displays are has been covered many times. You don't have to "read through each and every thread found on this forum", just use the search button, it's there for a reason.

and just use some common sense. If a display itself has terrible resolution, it doesn't make sense that feeding it a signal through a converter would make it better. That reminds me of those scams back in the day that promised to "upgrade your 486 to a pentium via software"

if you want good resolution, buy a VGA display and use that free one as a back seat display for playing movies and stuff, where there's no text to read.
But don't take it from me! here's a quote from a real, live newbie:

Don't get discouraged, it's just a question that has been asked a lot.

The monitor you linked to is a video monitor. It takes NTSC as the input, generally via an RCA jack.

As you said in your first sentence, you need a monitor that supports VGA for the text to be legible. Since that monitor does not support VGA, you can't view VGA on it. There is no way to convert an NTSC monitor to VGA, primarily because the number of pixels on the NTSC monitor is far lower than on even a low resolution VGA screen and it would require a completely different type of controller.

    Promise?

Now seriously, I usually dont tell off people, but your question isnt just on 2 or 3 threads, its just everywhere. If you missed it for some reason, thats another story, but your question had your answer included and I have better things to do that dispute about the searching issue!

I would suggest looking at buying a vga screen, either one of the 'new' lilliputs or a xenarc.. unsure of the 'new' lilliputs are out as yet, but looking at there design they should have solved afew flaws they had. This will be the best investment you can make towards a carputer, its such a good feeling the first time you put it on, and just 'touch' the screen and it works :-) As for having a go about asking this quesiton in the first place.. hell if you cant ask something like this then its a sad day, your new to these forums, and may not have even used a forum before.. at least you posted in the right section :-).. A word of warning..... once u enter the world of 'carputers' your life will never be the same again ! it just never stops.. lol

I did search through several threads at first and I wasn't able to find the exact info. I'm not too familiar with the terms so maybe I skipped past it - my fault. As for using the one I have right now as a back seat display, my car is a 2-seater

I apologize for my sarcasm. I tried to familiarize myself with the different terms by browsing through the forums and I may have accidently skipped some threads that contained the answer. I just wanted to double check my information - after all, that's what these forums are for right? I know the annoyance of new users asking common questions and I tried to search for my answer. Unfortunately I couldn't find the right thread, and IMHO I kind of felt there should be more in-depth stickies for common questions. I was just a bit annoyed with the regular user mentality of "search for it". I'm aware the search is there and I spent a while looking for it, but possibly due to my search terms, it didn't show up

Thanks for the info. Although I have been browsing around this board for a while, I'm not new to forums in general. I can't wait to get my carputer set up

Looking through the stickies on different displays, I think I may go with this one since the dimensions seem to fit my console area. Hopefully I can join in on the carputer world soon.

Hi, I have had a quick look at the tft on the ebay link you posted. I have had one similar to this.. I've had about 4 different types. The model I had, which I was dissapointed in the quality of the brighness was like this one but just branded different. If I was choosing one again, then I would pay the extra few bucks and go for this one http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...category=38650 (new lilliput screen). This of course would be my personal view.. but in my opinion worth the extra money.

    cheers
