My carputer project - Sharp TFT Touchscreen meets Lincoln Mark VIII

Hello everyone. I've come to figure out how to do what I want to do, and to see how others have done what I am trying to do. I have a '98 Lincoln Mark VIII, and I Loathe it's CD player. I don't like CD players anyway. So anyway I am setting up a PC based Carputor. Here is a picture of the car

Normally this wouldn't be a big deal, but I'm working with some things I've never tinkered with before- have a look...

It's a Sharp LQ9D161 TFT Display panel with Touchscreen. ~8.4" in diameter measure. I play to put it where the radio goes by modifying another panel in the console.

I'd have to modify one pretty well to make it fit right. the panel is just about the right width but about 1.5" too tall. I'll make it fit just fine, but that's not my problem. My problem is that I don't know how to intervace this device with a PC. How is it done? I noticed a small plug with what looked like 32 pins. Is there just a pigtail wiring harness I need to connect it to VGA or do I need a special controller? And if I need a controller, who do I talk to to get one? Also the touchscreen? Is it just some sort of serial interface I need or does that need a controller too? The computer component will be going in my trunk and the audio will be hardwired to the cars Stock JBL sound system. The JBL gear is all mounted on a fiberglass rack under the rear dash and there is alot of extra space on the rack where I'll put the computer components. And it will all be neatly covered up by the stock cover for the JBL gear. I can't wait to get this done, it's so gunna rock.. in quadraphonic stereo!

i would suggest that you get a different monitor, i.e xenarc or lilliput 7" touchscreen monitor. most likely, that sharp monitor would, at best, accept composite rca inputs. it's going to be blurry and is a far cry from what a vga touchscreen monitor has to offer.

    good luck on your project

if the touchscreen has exactly 4 wires (hard to tell from the pic) then you can probably use one of the touchscreen controllers from digitalww.com

however, I think you're going to have a lot of problems trying to get that display hooked up. if it's got some 32 pin connector, it's got to be proprietary... probably some sort of more direct controller, rather than using a VGA controller... In other words, it's doubtful you'll be able to hook it up to VGA. Every time I've looked online for information on controlling some proprietary LCD, I've turned up nothing... because the amount of reverse-engineering it would take to figure out the interface, and design a huge controller board to work with it... makes it nearly impossible. So unless you can find someone who's done it before (doubtful) or you can find what kind of controller board it used in whatever original equipment it was in, and cross your fingers that THAT used vga input... then I think you're pretty well screwed.

Just go buy a lilli or xenarc.
But don't take it from me! here's a quote from a real, live newbie:

I think you're probably right.. I've gone through the forums here and noticed the very nice things people had to say about the LCD I have and noticed that there are no nice things said about it.. I got a bid on another one on ebay, this one has a VGA option right on it, along with the power supply and all the hookups. It's a SUPER PD8009V, are those ok? Those Lilliputs are hard to find for under $250. Should I just eat it for one I know is good?
