    2005 Volvo S40 Advice/Worklog

So as of right now I have a pretty general plan. Once I get things going itll turn into more of a worklog.

Here is a pic that explains my situation a bit. Its about 1.7MB.

The inside is Fiber Optic so hopefully Ill be able to hardwire the audio in, even if that means removing the CD Player. Worst comes to worst Ill use an FM Modulator.

I play on getting an M1000 mini-itx board, 512mb ram. the mi-atx 90w psu, a valentine 1, vga touchscreen (no idea which model), and a 3.5HDD. Ive yet to find the cord but im pretty sure the fin on the top of the car is for GPS so there should be a wire for it somewhere in my head unit. I will be mounting the case (which Ive yet to choose) in the trunk. Ill probably be incorporating the ODB-II system and the valentine1 into the carpc. If possible, maybe ceiling mount a flip down screen in the back for watching movies.

Ive never seen anyone put a PC in a s40 2005. Hell, the pics of the optional navigation are rare enough. Anyone have any insight on how to go about doing this?

There are still a few things I need to determine, such as how many DIN the CD Player & FM take up or how I will mount the LCD on the top (if aux in allows me). Ive tried taking apart the head unit to get a look on the insides but I mustve been missing some screws because it wouldnt budge.

The inside of WHAT is fiber optic? The only thing that I could possibly see being fiber optic is anything that transmits data. That could be the CD player and/or changer and any data display. Possibly electronic climate controls and the like.
Fiber optic lines aren't cheap. They're also glass, which means they are fragile. Those two qualities make them less-than-ideal for a vehicle application.

Look at the Show Off Your project forum & the FAQ Emporium forum. Most of your answers will be there.

You mean DIN, which is a standard size for car audio equipment in the dash. DIMM is a Dual Inline Memory Module, which is RAM for your computer.
Have you looked in the FAQ yet?
    How about the Wiki?

They use MOST for the wiring of the CD Player/Radio to the speakers. I dont know much about it I just know all the wiring is fiber optic. Id take a closer look to see what it is but I need to get that head unit off first. Yes I mean DIN. *changed*

    ill be...

"The new M.O.S.T system (Media Orientated Systems Transport) is a multimedia fiber-optic network optimized for automotive applications. It connects a variety of systems that need to communicate - the GPS navigation has to work with the security system, the car telephone has to work with the entertainment system so it will mute when a call is received, voice activation and hands-free speakerphones require a microphone, and a display is needed for navigation and DVD playback to name just a few."

still sounds like they are talking about your data bus though, not your speaker wire

I dont know exactly how it works, Ive just read over and over that it is very hard to get an aux-in, even when replacing already installed components.

I have the same problem with my XC90 - MOST is the biggest PITA going.
However if you can get hold of the wiring diagrams for your car the output of the AMP to the speakers is not Fiber. I'm in the process of ripping out the stock headunit, replacing it with an Amp and then using the output of my CarPC to drive the speakers - EASY!
Then its a case of adding what functions you want to the PC to replace what you had and add more.......
A good place to start for wiring and Volvo help is www.vvspy.com
Good Luck - look forward to seeing the install

Little update. The sharkfin is in fact for GPS. I managed to get ahold of the electrical schematics. PM me if anyone wants it.

Silv3rman, Just in case you thought it was going to be plain sailing..... I started on my amp last night and found out that the XC90 amp has integrated crossovers (I presume the S40 is the same), so you'll need to add some of those to your shopping list - or things will never quite sound right!

Just took a look at your picture.

Well, if the Volvos bus can be hacked like the I-Bus, you should be all hooked up integrating the buttons on your Steering wheel into the system. That would be sweet, although, I am truly unsure if anyone has done that.

Next, where your navigation syetm would go seems like an ideal place for a screen.

I would remove that panel, and see how much room you have underneath there. You could then do one of several things. Hopefully there is enough room to fit most of a motorized screen in there. I would either sink the screen in there, leaving the top part where the screen come out of just above the line of the dash. I would then take that panel that you removed, and add some bondo/fb to make it sit on top of the screen, of course filling in the sides and back so that it fits the dash correctly. In that way, your screen will pop out when you start the car, and in when you turn it off, and you can keep your stock headunit.

The other thing youo can do, is mount it int he space under the panel, but angle it up. You would have to bondo as well, but it will be different. It wouldn't be this "hump" on the top of the dash, it would be more of a bump, with a screen that come out of it.

I have attached a couple of drawings to show what I mean
