    Laptop CarPC

    First off great site!

Second, I'm thinking of installing a car pc but I want to use a laptop. I haven't seen much on this site about that. What do I need for power, remote turn on/shutdown. I'm thinking about going with a Xenarc 7" tsv. I don't want to remove my factory sound system.

I'm buying a Dell 9300 or XPS fully loaded.

Give me some tips and let this newbie know what's up.

    Thanks!

You haven't looked very hard then. There's quite a few people using laptops in their vehicles.

Give me some tips and let this newbie know what's up.
    Tip #1: FAQ Emporium
    Tip #2: SEARCH
Have you looked in the FAQ yet?
    How about the Wiki?

first off m8.. welcome to the forums :-)

Jezz.. thats one major laptop your going for ! I dare say the last thing you will want to do is start pulling it apart and soldering wires to it. This is needed to power on / off the laptop remotely. The option I would advice is grab yourself a cheap docking station (ebay poss) These come with a power button, so instead of hacking your comp up / u can play with the docking station instead. Now then... the fun starts. You will need to get yourself a startup / shutdown controller, you can go for something dead simple like 1 relay / 1 cap / 1 resister to do this.. basicly the 12v from your ignition goes live it flicks the relay and presses your power button, the cap fills up, which simulates a 1/2 button press. once the cap is full it cuts the power to the relay.. the resister is there to drain the cap once power is removed. .. so thats a easy way. You will of course need a power unit of some sort.. A inverter is an easy option but not the most efficent. A DC - DC psu owuld be better. Dell do there own aircraft charge type thing, which is what I use myself. At the top of the forum u will find a search button, have a look for 'laptop shutdown' or even just 'laptop' there are loads of posts to look at, just take your time and draw up a plan.

hope some of this info helps
