Looking for help from you guys

Hey all, I am somewhat new to here. I am ready to start building my system. I've done my searches but they just aren't enough. I'd greatly appreciate it if somebody could recommend system specs for me.

    This is a poor request.
    1) We don't know what you want out of a PC in the car. Do you want to play MP3s? GPS navigation? Control of your cellphone? OBDII interface? A mobile office on wheels? WiFi access? Figure that each function you want going at the same time is going to eat up a little more system horsepower, so the more functionality, the higher the system specs you need.
    2) If you can't even come up with a ballpark for system specs, you're goping to have a very rough go with this project. It's not as easy as buying a Dell and putting it in your trunk.
    3) You say you've searched, but there's a whole forum of nothing but FAQs, including at least one about system specs. It's called the FAQ Emporium. You either didn't search hard enough or this forum was somehow overlooked. Go there and read.
Have you looked in the FAQ yet?
    How about the Wiki?

Under normal circumstances, a signature would go here.

Thanks for flaming coupled with minimal help. Nevermind it. I decided to go the DC-AC inverter route and build a mATX system. I only wanted a general idea of what people wished they had put in their cars.

You have to admint thought mate that asking such a general question on a technical forum was either going to get no reply, or a direct one as above -surely this was clear by the fact that there are the following icons to choose when reply:

Posting about a specific setup e.g. how good is a lilliput 7" etc is a little more clear for answers, however the general consensus on here is that you search first and ask questions later, much later.

As to your last point, this is a builders forum, there is little that guys on here wished thay had put in their cars that is not either going in now, or on the list.

search a bit more and you will see why you should scale your system around a dc-dc psu. YOu can run a damn quick carPC off an opus 150. If you are buying new then i say go for a mobile athlon. Going second hand then try a P3 1Ghz - they blow away epia boards and are low power.

Not to keep rehashing this, but it kind of bothers me that you are so snappy at him for flaming you. If you even once pushed the search button on this site, forgetting for a second you might have found your answers, you would have found for sure plenty of posts where people asked questions like yours and got flamed. If you have been here for more than a couple days, there is no way no how you actually thought someone was going to respond with, "Well first I would log onto www.Mp3Carstore.ocm and buy an Opus150, second, I would head over to Newegg, search for Asus . . . "
Its not the cards you're dealt, its how you play the hand!

I second the notion to look around a see why an inverter by itself is not the best bet. If you do decide to go that route then I'd recommend getting a startup/shutdown controller. The OPUS 150 is the perferred solution (or any DC-DC power supply with built in startup/shutdown controller). (PS: I ran an inverter for a while and did not like it.)

Then there's also how much money do you want to put towards the system and what do you already have on hand. Like Scouse Monkey said, if you've got a P3 laying around you may as well put it to good use.

As far as recommending system specs, there is no set answer. I don't think that DarquePervert was trying to flame you but rather get some more information. For someone who only wants to play MP3 then their system specs would not be as high as someone who wants to be able to play Doom3 while driving 80mph down the highway. (BTW, I don't recommend doing that.) The first guy may only need a miniITX setup while the second may need a P4 running with dual DC-DC powersupplies. There's also a very big price difference between the two.

Answer these questions to better help you with your answer:
    Wanna play MP3s?
Wanna play videos (DivX, avi, mpeg, etc.)?
    Wanna play DVDs?
    Do you want GPS navigation?
    Cell phone capabilities?
Do you want WiFi (wireless networking)?

All in all, what do you want to do with your computer will decide how much of a system you need.

My specs are as follows (when it gets reinstalled):
Lilliput 8" TS, OPUS 150, ATX mobo, Athlon XP 2400, 512MB RAM, 250GB harddrive, Panasonic slim DVD+/-RW with 2.5" adapter and a Quick-Serv USB EZ-GO USB2.0 to IDE adapter, SoundBlaster Extigy, Buffalo WLI2-USB2-G54 wNIC, Delorme Earthmate USB GPS, TRENDnet TBW-101UB Bluetooth adapter connected to my Pioneer GM-5000T amp (with 2 - Pioneer Premier TS-SW124D 12" subs) and a Pioneer GM-6000F amp (with 2 - Pioneer TS-A6680R 6x8 4-ways and 2 Pioneer TS-A6870R 6x8 3-way speakers)
