I would "say" most prob just install all the software in the house....I did mine in the house and then bring it to the car...too long to sit in car or to keep going out to check it....
Hello - is the consensus to install the hardware in car first, then set about installing the OS etc, or is there a way to do this before hardware installation e.g. in the house so I can us a monitor?

There is no real advantage to doing it in the car, except that if the Po Po come knocking, you are already in your car ready to get the heck outta there.

In the house. You're always missing something, tinkering with this, adjusting that. Gets really old in the car. In the house, you have beer, TV, internet, and popcorn. And time.

Depends on your setup, I guess. I'm planning on using a laptop that, for security & reliability reasons, will be mounted fairly permanently. I don't want to be pulling the system out and slapping it back in on a regular basis.
On the other hand, it'll be set up using Linux, a wireless ethernet card, and a SSH server daemon in the background. Assuming I can get a decent signal through the gawd awful thick walls of my apartment building (old brick/concrete/stone construction, typical of downtown Troy, NY), I'll be able to log in via SSH to the laptop, and remote administrate it from my desktop in the bedroom... assuming I can find some way to power it (hook it up to a marine battery, and find some way to charge it, without draining the normal battery).
Of course, this does require me to install at least the base system in the house, just enough to get the SSH server running. After that, everything else can be done from SSH.
I suppose you could do the same with Windows if you're going that route, maybe with Remote Desktop, but I haven't played around with it enough to be able to tell you definitely.
There's an easy solution to this... just keep doing odd things, and after a while, they'll look at you wierd if you do something normalAnd your neighbors start looking at you weird.. I'm a high tech redneck located in downtown Troy, and just 'bout everything I did at first brought a strange look... from dragging in old computer systems to working on my car on the adjacent parking lot while blaring country music
