Most of that is possible.

Ok. a shopping list of requests. I want a carPC that
a)Plays mp3, DVDs and CDs
b)Has a working Radio that uses the cars antena
c)Has a TV tuner
d)Has Bloototh that can
1) allow my pc to act as a smart head set. Puasing my music on the event of an incoming call. Also, alow me to use my cell phones voice dial functions.
2) Act as a network bridge for my tunsten T3.
e)Has Wifi, I'd love to be able to access and use the bandwith of local wifi access points that are scattered all over town.
f)Has front side USB ports, so I can plug in a flash drive with mp3s
g)Has front side SD card slot for the same reason.
h)Has a LED display to tell my what "mode" im in when I change modes and then retern to displaying the time.
i)Allow me to use my stearing wheel controlls to controll the volume of the music, and change modes and or tracks.
j) Can store some, but not a lot of music
k) Can let me use my CDMA cell phone for GPS navigation.
Is all this possible? What hardware, front end would be best?
Also, the car to be upgraded is a GM lacking onstar. and I would be removing the cars current radio,
Most of that is possible.

Ok, I looked through the FAQs but none of them seemed to come close to talking about hooking up my cars radio antena to a card or usb device that would be on my car pc.
The closest I got was the talk about pluging the head units output into the aux input on my sound card, or somthing similar. Probelm is all the solutions want you to have a head unit to do your radio tuning. I wont. I'll be ripping the original radio out and using the larger (1 1/2 din) opening for the pc and controlss. There is no room in the dash for another din sized device.
Has any one tried softeare driven radio tunning using a pci card.
i dont think u have done enuf serching .. COME BACK 2 WEEKS!
All those are possible if you are searching
Some are possible if you are just asking.

BTW, none of you are all that helpfull. Just using the search tool won't get an uniformed person the awsers they want. And since this place is so massive it can be very intimidating.Originally Posted by DJGietzen
Here is a breakdown of what I've found.
a) yes. Using a dvd drive and a quality motherboard/proccessor
b) No. The hardware does not exsist. The is an incomplete hobby project, and an unreleased comercial board.
c) yes. a PCI tv tuner card will do the job.
d)yes, using a usb bloototh dongle it is possible for both options 1 and 2 under windows xp
e) yes, using a wifi pc card. but reception will be limited being inside the dash.
f) yes. use a usb extention cable from the back of the main board.
g)But you'll need to get a usb hub, since thiw will takes up a usb slot (putting your count to three)
h)yes abd no, its possbile but not current front end supports it.
i) Not possible yet. There is no device that will turn gm factory stering wheel controls into an input device.
j)yes, your car pc will have a hard drive, make it beig enough to store music aswell as the os.
k) yes and no, depends on your phone, my v710 won't cut it (also this can't be done over bluetooth while the pc is a headset or a bridge.
Why was it soo freaking hard for any of you to just say, yes, I know that can be done, or No, can't do that yet. Also the FAQ emporium is a joke, dos'nt awnser a single one of my less then obvias questions.
lol someone should lock this... my spidey senses sense this one getting out of hand...
Hmmm, sounds like time to go find another forum the specializes in carPC projects since this one is obviously not fulfilling your needs.Originally Posted by DJGietzen

I thought my answer was very helpful. As I said, most of what you asked is possible. I pointed you to a resource that, after you looked through it, allowed you to not only confirm that answer but figure out the particulars of accomplishing it.
You asked both easy and difficult questions. Explaining to you that each car PC installation is a custom endeavor and requires an investment in time and planning wouldn't have meant the same thing to you yesterday as it does now.
A lot of our regular members are criticized by new members because they either post unhelpful comments or tell folks to search. Most often they are told that if they don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all. I suspect that is why they haven't responded to your post.
By the way, if you do some more searching, you'll find that you can use your GM controls, but you'll have to figure out how they work and interface them to the computer yourself. It's possible, but an advanced hack.
Search on terms: "steering wheel control". I did and found this thread. It seems there are generally two types of controls on the steering wheel. One is straightforward buttons. The other uses a voltage divider network. Each button changes the voltage on a line and the car can use that to tell which button was pushed. So can you, if you're up to it.
