Uh... you need the receiver to tell where you are and track your moving stats... the DVD or HDD will only store the map information.
The receiver isn't that intrusive. It only measures like 1.5"x2.0". You can mount it on your rear window deck.

Anyway. There are GPS receivers that allow you to use external antennas. You can alo get external antennas that include satellite radio & GPS receivers in one unit that is in various styles, including the BMW shark-fin. I don't know if that's what's on your BMW or not, but it's an alternative.
Or you can just do what I do and secure the GPS antenna pretty much inconspicuously in the corner of your back window.
They're not that big.
