Question How do i power pc in car?

Hey guys!I'm new to this so please be easy on me!

I have a PC against my bedroom wall that i aint using and thought i could use as a PC in my Honda Civic.

The problem is i dont know nothing about electricity! How do i power the pc in my car?I have read some forums and threads and i read about AC/DC, DC-DC PSUs, inverters and i am lost!

Can i use the same PSU inside my tower in my car or do i need a special PSU?What this deal about AC/DC and DC-DC and inverters?

Sumarizing, what do i need to power my pc in my Civic?

    Thanks in advance guys!

Simple answer. WIth an inverter is what basically happens is you put a standard plug outlet in your wall, into your car. IE you can use the PSU now. Downsides is they dont always work with every computer/psu for some reason, they generate a lot of heat, and dont come packed with the features ones like the OPUS do (such as startup/shutdown etc.). Also just not as "cool".

DC-DC has a better reputation as cool (and come on CarPC all about the bragging rights haha) is more efficient, and generates much less heat. Downside, your limited at this time to 150W when buying, you can make a 250W one thats talked about here but it looks kinda complicated (though a ton of people love it and had no problem) and I think a 350W homemade one is in the works as well. Or if your lucky like me you find one of those older (used) retail 250+w DC-DC that people used to sell.

So, what do you recommend? I'm not really bothered about the "cool" aspect of it.I'm new to this and gonna experiment with my car so i can do without the PSU that enables the startup/shutdown feature.

I want to keep it simple for now. I am concerned about how to power it as i would need to change the power cable.

    What can i do?

Dude im the last to call spoonfeeding and say read the FAQ but seriously, not only did I answer all the basics on an inverter in my first post, you clearly didn't read in the FAQ about powering a CarPC.

From what your describing an inverter is probably the way to go, but to be brutely honest don't tackle this if you can't sit down and read and research for a looong time. I'm normally the first to spam noob questions but I managed so I have faith =D

You'll notice some of the best, well-informed, posters here haven't even built their CarPC yet.... reason is, for many there is A LOT of research involved. If you can't spend the time researching dont expect youll be able to have patience to troubleshoot etc.

I'm not trying to be rude or anything don't get me wrong, just giving some advice. And normally a project like this I would put WAY past myself (I'm not the most patient person after all lol) but I was determined enough I knew I could put the time in.

    No not at all hehe

On a different note, tahts crazy I havent seen that before why did it automatically make those words into links lol =P

But yea, if you didnt see it go to the FAQ emporium and then the FAQ to the FAQs, read through the topics in there that you have questions about, for me I had to read the power one about 6 times before I was ready to ask questions lol (and some other research).

The important thing to remember though (as someones sig says) it can be done, and it has been done. So don't get discouraged =D

But do you understand the differences between AC and DC? Do you know the differences of the power supplied in your car and in your house?
If you know that, then understanding the different PSU solutions is much easier. Does the faq's mention those basic things?

HI!Well no, i dont understand the diffreneces of AC and DC.I dont know any of the answers to your questions.

I've overlooked the faqs and havent seen these explained.Maybe they are there but i am concentrating on the Power Supplies article by BugByte.

However, if you can asnwer those questions for me i'll be very greatful!

    Thanks!
