To remove or not to remove HU???

    Hey guys!

Right now i have a Clarion cd player in my car, 4 speakers, 2 amps and 1 sub.

Im goin to insert a carpc but i wont know if to remove the HU or not.

I want the the pc to manage everything, but i read some users say that the wont remove the HU just because the still want to keep the radio.

Im not really fussed about keeping the radio or not, but i want to see what you guys think.

Are there any advantages of keeping the HU?Any disadvantages?

    Thanks!

    Keep it.

With all the tweaking, troubleshooting and downtime you will be glad you have it. Does your H/U have an Aux or digital in ?

    Reasons to keep a headunit:
    - If it has Aux In, its easier to hook up the carpc to the speakers without buying a separate amp and rewiring the car
    - You can maintain that nice volume knob without buying a phidget or powermate
    - You get to keep AM/FM radio with a good tuner

    Reasons to ditch headunit:
    - You never use AM/FM or you're fine buying a USB/PCI FM tuner card and hooking it up to the car antenna. People have been less that ecstatic about the sound from the FM tuners (which require the use of the audio in jack if you buy a PCI version which eliminates you're 5.1 output unless using SPDIF). Theres another thread in the hardware development forum on the ultimate carpc tuner card.
    - You need that room for the monitor (relocating HU is an option here though)

There's other reasons and better explanations which are available to the avid searcher!!

leave it in, just installed my monitor. looks greak. with a little modification it can be done in most cars. also as the people said before it is usful sometimes. some people have even molded a non in dash monitor in the car, (respect to them, but whey to complicated for my liking. my pic is here:

I keep mine, mainly cuz a lot of my journies are within my local town and I cba to have the pc boot up just to go 2 miles when all ill need is a 5 mins of music that a HU can supply adequately... but as soon as i have to go out of town I want the pc on for speed cam assist, navigation etc so switch the HU to aux and use winamp instead

yeah, if uve already got a decent HU that has AUX-IN u'd be stupit to remove it, its as simple as running a line from the PCs LINE-OUT to the HUs AUX-IN. minimum fuss, no messing around. EZY hope all goes well
Im planning to sleep my way to the top! wake me up when im there.
