My plans, I am le newbie

Ah a friend from vwvortex has sent me to the promissed land to build my carputer. My plans are simple:

I want a computer with touch screen. I want a wireless connection on my car to download files from a network. That is about it. I could imagine wanting gps and voice commands for the computer as well but that seems much more diffucult and $$$.

I understand I will be learning scripts to enable the touch screen. I also never though of the powering up and down for the unit would require a special item duh.

Wow, that was fast fluxburn (I sent him from vwvortex). There's lots of searching you need to do. Check out my worklog for a list of parts I've got so far.

    The basics are:
    - a low power/small PC. The Via EPIA M-series are great for this, of course there are a million options.

    - Some way to power it. Either get an inverter and use a regular ATX power supply or get a DC-DC power supply.

    - An LCD touch screen. The "touch" part of it is a USB device that acts like a mouse when using the correct drivers. No scripting.

    - A frontend of some sort. This isn't required but there are several free (as in beer) software projects out there that give you a nice professional look.

    - The GPS and wifi link are just add-ons (USB, pc card, PCI card) to your motherboard.
    My worklog.
Status: VM GTI sold, got out of the CarPC tinkering hobby, but I still think about getting back in.
