    Toshiba Satellite 1100

Hey i own a Toshiba Satellite 1100 with a broken screen, i want to mount it in the tray of my dualcab hilux. Got Some questions:

Wireless remote, so i can start the laptop up 100m from the car so its good to go when i get there.
Switch in the front, just flick it on and it starts the laptop up.
    Start on ignition

I'm really not sure how i would go about setting up any of these ideas so could someone please shed some light. or post some tutorials i could read.

Also, for power i was thinking of installing an 300W inverter in the tray with the laptop. My question about this is will 300W be fine, and what peak power should i be looking at if it spikes? Also i would love to utilize the hibernation of my laptop, but does this need power? and if so, how long can it stay in hibernation before emptying the battery of my laptop.

If anyone has installed a laptop in their car feel free to gimme some tips and stuff.

    thanks

hmm, not sure on remote startup, button can be extended with wires, but requires the laptop to be pulled apart. theres a turorial on here somewhere.

300w is way more than enough for a laptop, you can get dc power supplies for most laptops, they are around 80-150watts.

hibernation needs power, how good is your laptops battery? battery could last for around 4-5 hours with a good battery, im not exactly sure what sort of powerdraw a laptop on hibernate uses. hope some of this helped.

You'd want to solder wires the two points on the power button for that laptop. Once that's done, you can pull off any of the starting methods you listed.

You'll be a lot happier if you locate a car adapter for your laptop and power it using that instead of an inverter.
Have you looked in the FAQ yet?
    How about the Wiki?

what type of neons are you running? most run off 12v through their own inverter, they cant be run from a 12v-240v inverter, different voltage. most dc adaptors for laptops run from the cigarette lighter socket, but you could hard wire it if you want.

Hey would this be good for my install?

    http://cgi.ebay.com.au/BRAND-NEW-UNI...QQcmdZViewItem

    It says:

    Output voltage:16V/18V/19V/20V(-0.4/+0.5V@4A LOAD)
    Output currentC16V-20V 4AMP(max)

and from looking at my laptop im 3.95A or 2.3A (do i look at input or output?)
    at 19v?

    so good?
    thanks

nope. Standby needs power. hibernation doesn't.

Hibernation = suspend to HDD - takes a few seconds to do and then a few seconds (with timer bar) to reload. The power to the PC can be completely cut.

Standby = suspend to RAM - prety much instant off and on but needs power to the RAM to be maintained. More suscepitble to getting messed up and if you kill the power then a restart is needed. A decent laptop should survive a few days in standby but this will be using your battery and it will need to powered up long enough to recharge if you want to keep using the standby. You can always set laptops to change to hibernate from standby when the power gets down to a certain level - say 10-20%. This way you just have a slightly longer boot time if you have left the car for more than a day or two.

thanks for the correction there scouse. i have to admit i didnt know that one because i havent used hibernation before, what sort of boot times does one get with hibernate then? might have a better look into that now.

hibernate will be quicker than a fresh boot but slower than hibernate. Can range from 20-30 seconds in my experience. My desktop here is a P4 2.4 and i have the on-off set to hibernate. it iwll hibernate in a few seconds and to be honest i get in, press the button and by the time i have sat down and tunred the screen on my PC is at the logon screen. It will have to go through a bios load when using hibernation and then does a windows load thing (the white bar graph). Keeping the hibernation file size down probably helps (not looked into it) and so does a nice quick bios.
