    how do your carpc's startup?

Hello i have seen a few of your projects and i love it but i don't understand one little thing...
how do you start up and shut down your carpc's? the same way that you start up and shut down a "normal" pc? i mean.. you have to wait like 30seconds to 1 minute to be able to use the pc and then more time to shut down or theres is something special in this car pc's that make this work faster or something.

I havea fiat 600 D from 1970 and i was considering build a carpc instead of put a radio

Heres is a picture of my car btw:

That radio and the console is not there anymore

    Waiting for your answers

Yep pretty much, you can cut the time down but a H/U will be faster. Why is this such a concern? Do you only drive for 40 seconds or something?

well not 40 seconds. this was just curiosity... special on the shut down.. you have to wait the computer to shut down before remove the keys frm the car, right?

    Well, yes and no.

There is a startup and shutdown "procedure" but, the startup can be hastened with some streamlining, and the shutdown can actually be eliminated (I think it can be eliminated, but certainly going into hibernate is much quicker then a shutdown) with Hibernate Once, Resume Many (or search for HORM). Another option is a startup/shutdown controller. This will power down your computer once you turn the car off, and you need not wait to remove your key, because the controler leaves power to the computer during the entire shutdown sequence (if you choose to use one) and then cuts it once the computer is shutdown. In this way, you don't have to wait.

You should definitely read all the FAQs in the FAQ section, and do a little reading, because most of your questions will be answered without needing to post.

    That's pretty easy.
The pc only goes into hibernating/standby normaly.
That gives you a startup time of about 20-30s or less.
Most of the people are using special powersupplies that startup your pc and also give the signal for going into hibernation if you turn of the engine.
The powersupplies that are mostly use are the M1-ATX and Opus.
You will surley find some more information about this topic on the forum.

Have fun building in a carpc in that cute oldtimer

H/U is a headunit (No not a Girlfriend ), a radio/cd/tape player for the car.

    H/U =Head Unit = Radio

I soldered wires to my laptop switch. I am going to run them to a momentary switch in my dash.

Because my laptop has battery I can just shut down the car and let the computer shut itself down, or go to standby or hibernate after a set amount of time on internal power.

It is also much faster to start your computer from standby or hibernate than from off.

Because I have a switch I can also wait to start my computer if it is extremely hot or cold.

You can also use a "startup/shutdown controller"

If you read the FAQ section or search for "startup" and "shutdown" you will find everything you want to know.

    No need to apologize, Really.

I tell you that only to save you from the getting the dreaded and flags.

You posted in the Newbie section, so it is understood that you are new, and therefore, will get some basic information to get you started on your search. We really are here to help, but we can't answer the same questions over and over, it just gets too time consuming. Certainly, if you have additional questions, and you can't find the answers, feel free to post.

Just understand sending you to the FAQ and the function is not a personal thing. Trust me, the FAQs will be VERY helpfull, and will probably answer most, if not all, of your preliminary questions.

Have fun, and good luck with the project. Just so you know, you will never be done with it. No matter what stage you get to, it is never quite done.
