    My head is spinning

    Hi guys/girls,
I stumbled across this forum while searching for a ribbon cable for my sony HU. (thank god i did, as i wanted to build a carputer)

    WoW - what a wicked forum !!

I have been reading and reading, 7 hours so far, and my head is all messed up. I was wondering if someone would be kind enough to answer me a few questions, just to get me on the right path.

I have decided to buy a 7" motorized touchscreen HU, as i do not have room to fit a screen in my dash. (Toyota Rav4). Are these HU's a good choice to go with and will they work with RR?

I am slightly confused when it comes to the power. Am i right in thinking i can install a small desktop PC and power it using a 150w inverter ? or do i have to build a new PC with a motherboard that uses less power.

Also, i installed RR onto my home PC to see what it was like and all my mp3's have a straight line through them. They will not play and nor will any videos.

If someone could answer these questions, i will be very greatful.

    Thanks Guys/girls.

in fact, you haven't read much.

    The FAQ http://www.mp3car.com/vbulletin/the-faq-emporium/

    okay to answer you.
Most carPc installed use 7" screen and some 8". And software/front end like RR are written/skin with a mall monitor (7") in mind. So they are okay.

There is NO need to buy new PC if your old one capable of what you need for carPC (GPS, Music, movie ..... Porn). Take a look at mp3car's store to see the power option (Power Supply) and build your carPC around that limitation. Currently the most powerfull PSu is DSATX which is 220W but not widely available as it is in beta stage. Or you can build one like mine (Sproggy 4.5) which is the most powerfull PSU, but PITA to get parts.
RR has it own subforum, go there and read the faq, but basically if you know how to use winamp, you can use RoadRunner.

If your talking about a touchscreen HU like what Alpine makes, then no it's no good. Dude you don't to buy anything yet. 7 hours of reading is nothing. Keep reading for atleast another week before you even think about planning anything out. Then start buying thing AFTER you have a plan.

    Thanks for the reply's.
Yes i do understand that 7 hours is not enough reading, and i know i have alot of stress, coffee and fags to get through before i start my project.

Here is the spec of the Hu i was thinking about:
    1. Part of Monitor Display Mode 16:9
    2. Resolution: 640x480~1280x768 (native: 800x480) (WVGA)
    3. Pixel 0.06 X 0.18
    4. Valid Display Area 7 INCH
    5. Contrast 250 : 1
    6. Brightness 400 nits
    7. View Angle: 40 degree in Horizontal
    8. 30 degree in Vertical
    9. Working temperature 0-50 degree

Just so you know, that is not a "headunit", unlike what you said in your original post ("buy a 7" motorized touchscreen HU," That is just a motorized display with TS. I have never heard of, or seen that brand before. Not sure of the cost of that unit, or where you are getting it and where you are located, but if you want motorized VGA screens with TS, then look at the MP3Car.com store, and www.digitalww.com for your needs. They will definitely work for what you need, and both vendors support their products very well.

That's an easy one to do. Rip out the head unit and put a 7" VGA touchscreen in it.

I just had a really long nap and it was excelent, and to celebrate this good mood I feel like answering some of the questions:

    - RR wont play music because its not correctly integrated with winamp. RR needs to *start* winamp (not just have winamp loaded while RR is loaded).
    - Inverters aren't the smart way to do it (DC-DC) psu's are much more efficent, cheaper, and have less quirks but if you must go inverter (my current car uses one, it does the job) your going to want it to put out about double the size of your computer power supply. Ex: I tried using a 350 watt power suppplky with my 400 w inverter, and it didn't start right. My new 90 watt power supply works great with my 400 w inverter, and can still keep all the pieces moving (but my compy is only 300 mhz with 2 hard drives, and my LCD which is also powered off of the line)
    - Id research that monitor a bit more before you buy it, it looks like the best brand monitor is xenarc, and monitor is the only thing that really matters in your setup. Your computer could be complete crap (mine is a old computer gutted and held in place with bungie cable in the trunk) but people only see your monitor, and if that doesn't look good because you tried to save $50 then the whole effor is wasted.
Current projects: iGmod reloaded (Latest release) (put on hiatus indefinatly)

Ok truthfully I am just 'frugal' so I havent bought anything yet. Im waiting for the day when I sign into the forum and someone posts "FREE CARPUTER! PM ME YOUR ADDRESS"
