    Popup Display

Hey, I'm new here, David (0|33|) told me about this place. Anyways I have a Subaru Forrester and was wondeirng if it would be possible to put a screen in the little flip up compartment above the stereo and stuff. It opens upwards and has at least a 4x4 inch space inside. I am wodnering if it is possible to set a screen up (just the hardware for hte display, the other stuff can fit somewhere else) so that it when I open up the lid it would come up and be viewable. I'm not sure if this would require hinging a screen to the lid or using soemthing else but I'm wondering if anyone else has done anyhting like this. I'll try to get some pics of the flip up thing and the space inside it by the weekend but I hope my description is good enough to get a relative idea of the space and the feasibility and difficulty of puting a screen in there (If it doesnt fit there I doubt I can put one anywhere else because I'm not willing to take out the radio or anything of a new car.
    Thanks so much.

If there is enought space for the entire touchscreen in the compartment then it shouldn't be a problem. You could add a small hinge at the top of the screen so it flips down into place then you pop the compartmet open.

God_of_CPU makes a G35 flip up screen. I think it would work just like the one you want.

Someone else posted about this as well. Search on terms "flip up screen" or "motorized screen" or variations therein.

I have one I made but it's not exactly like the one you are talking about. You can check it out at my web site.

Thanks so much for answering my questions. I think the hardest part will be finding a screen that is only 4 inches because Burban (0|33|) told me xenarc makes the best screens but they dont make anythign as small as I need.
Bugbyte, the thing you made for your car is in the same place as what I would have but is computer controlled and stuff and goes straight up I think mine would have to be on a hing of some sort at the bottom but I'm open to all possibilites that don't leave damage to the car (I'm hoping to be able to get away with just a few screw holes and at most 1 or 2 drilling holes, I'm going to try to do it without having to lift the dash, I mainly just want to have gps. Anyways I will see. Thanks so much and I love the iBug

    What's up Andrew?

You can always go to the junk yard and pick yourself up a dash from a wrecked Subaru. From the looks of it, you should be able to modify it for a xenarc.

Hey david, anyways I'm not going to modify the dash but I will look in to modifying it for a zenarc. I was also thinking of maybe putting in a old palm pilot screen but not sure if that would be possible or even a good idea.

    Is this your dash?

    1. What David said makes sense. Get a junkyard dash and use it to make your screen. If you ever need to put it back right, use the original.

    2. What's inside that cover? Post some pics. A lot of times those things are modular. A couple of screws and the whole bay pops out.

    3. For GPS you need a larger, not smaller screen. You need at least a 7" screen, which is the most common type used by folks on this forum.

    Here's a link to a 2006 Forester install.

Here's another link to a 2005 install with two screens.

Apparently, there is some kind of a shroud you can buy that will fit in that compartment. You can see it in the second link.
