The motherboard has a build-in CPU. Read the specs. It tells you that.
And the setup you propose is a common one. most people go with that setup beause it's simple.
After searching and getting help from a few board members here, I think I've figured out what I am going to get. If you see any flaws in my CarPC let me know or suggest something better. I'd appriciate it.
Motherboard: VIA EPIA M10000 Mini-ITX board
Power Supply: M1-ATX 90 Watts
Monitor: Lilliput 7" Touchscreen VGA or Xenarc 700TS
Harddrive: 120 GB
Memory: 512 MB
CD/DVD ROM: Unsure of yet
Questions: Do I need a processor or does that motherboard have one already? Do I need any type of Startup/Shutdown Controller? For GPS, the only thing I'd need is the GPS reciever of some sort and then a software for it correct?
Thanks in Advance,
Kyle
Would I need a sound/video card of some sort? I'm going to be hooking my car stereo to the computer.
How hard is it to read the specs for the motherboard you're interested in?
It says that the motherboard has onboard sound. Now, you may want a different solution for better quality. That's up to you.
Do you need it? No.
Actually I did read it. I was just unsure if it was of decent quality or if I could set up a 5.1 sound system with it. Is there anything else I am missing?
The M1ATX has built in startup/shutdown so you're fine there. You can do 5.1 with that board although some people think the sound isn't great. I'd advise you try it and if you don't like it, add a USB Audigy to it.
Also, if you can afford it, get the M12000. That is a little faster and seems to be gaining in popularity.
As for GPS, you're post is correct.

One more vote for this as a started setup. This is really close to what I have. As DarquePervert said, it's a common setup because it's simple. I used a 2.5" hard drive and not that big, and I went with the Lilliput. If I were you, I would see if the on-board video and/or sound did what you wanted and buy other parts later if you need them. I can't tell the difference in sound quality using the onboard sound, but I'm not an SQ guy.Originally Posted by kbkid

What are some of the extra cables I'm going to need. I've read tons on threads and searched. I've read the FAQ to the FAQs.
Seriously...
If you don't know what cables you're going to need to conenct various components and/or peripherals, you're going to have problems.
Building a PC for your car is no different than building a PC for your home or office with two glaring exceptions:
1) Space. This is the easiest hurdle to get over. There's a myriad of smaff formfactor components available.
2) Power. This is a lot more tricky, since there are only a handful of power supplies for DC-DC. There's always an inverter, but that brings other issues into the mix.
Build your PC on a desktop first and get it the way you want it. Then change the power to work in the car. That's my sugggestion. That way you're going to know what cables, adapters and doo-dads you need.
Let me offer a suggestion. Approach this whole thing a bit differently. It feels like you're trying to get do a "what is everything I need so I can go out and buy it all at once and be done" type thing. Maybe you shouldn't do that.Originally Posted by kbkid
Maybe you should buy the components you listed. Get them together at your place, play with them. Now think about installing this in your car. This is a bit how I did it:
- Ok, I've got everything here. Wow, neat! Install Windows, install CentraFuse (I had already played with them on my desktop and decided on CF).
- The computer goes in the trunk, the LCD goes in the dash, that's longer than 5ft, I need a VGA extension cable, oh and the same for the USB touch screen. Oh and how do I power the VGA? search search search. Looks like I'll power it from the m1-atx, I need some molex connectors and some 12ga cable.
- Now, how about getting sound out...hmmm..I needed to construct a custom interface to my Volkswagen Monsoon amp. Other people are luckly, they just need headphone plug to RCA plugs.
...And so on, and so on...Treat it as a series of problems to solve, not a "buy it all and be done". The question about cabling and accessories is so specific to your install and your tastes that we can't really help you. If you come back to us with a specific problem, you're likely to get more help.
