Hi
I am the proud new owner of a Mk 5 GTI Golf (hence the name).
I would like to fit a carputer to it and replace the original screen with a 7 inch touchscreen monitor. I was thinking of situating the computer in the boot in what would look like a false floor and the amp etc next to it, accessing the spare wheel by hinges on the false floor.
I would like a bit of advice whether this is the best steps or how you would attempt this project. I want to be able to return things to how I received it obviously when i sell it in the distant future.

Well there are a bunch of VW owners here. But you might be the first MkV GTI owner (I've got a MkIV GTI). Without pics or specifics I'm not sure how we'll be much help. For mounting ideas (screen and PC) check out the worklogs and the show off your project. There are probably some MkV jettas around.Originally Posted by GOLF_MK5_GTI

I'm building a system in an 03 Jetta. I needed AM/FM radio (Yankees games) so I'm going with a 1-DIN headunit and a 1-DIN flip-up touchscreen. I also like to have a more-powerful computer than necessary so I decided that for me building in the trunk would be cheaper than going with the micro-atx form factor (epia) and allows you to use standard components.
I assume you have a stock Monsoon headunit and amp. Start reading about that because it's not exactly standard. It's not too bad replacing just the headunit as there are adapters for the harness and antenna but if you take out the headunit and feed your computer straight into the amp it can be tricky. There's a great post in the FAQ forum. And you should start there anyway.
Take a look at what R32Juhl did. His worklog is here:
2004 VW R32 Install - NOT DIAL-UP FRIENDLY
I happened to have that bookmarked. Anyway, until you've done at least a little homework and have specific questions, don't expect a lot of help if it's clear you haven't read the FAQs anded already.

Well im in the same boat. I just picked up an 06 MKV GTI too. I still have the carputer that i pulled from my last car but i cannot find as many convenient places in the GTI as i had in my last car. I'm definately installing it, im just not sure when. The first step is planning and even with my last car that took a looooooong time. My last car. This is how it looked after i installed the screen.![]()

My co-worker has an 06 VW GTI and I built up a nice bezel for him, he's using a Xenarc, but the design can handle a Lilliput also. I'll post up photos this weekend, we are going to install it tomorrow. If all works well, I might consider making up a batch for sale. Stay tuned.

phc, can you post pics of the VW bezel? I saw your other stuff up for sale, nice. Is that stuff generic or specific to WRX dash?
