Need an Advice and Opinion from Veterans...

Well, I consider myself as a veteran RX7 owner.. but here, I guess I'm a newbie.

I've been on this forum for about a half a year.. I've seen some great stuff and I am definitely interested in incorporating this to my car(s).

What I would like to get from you veterans is this.
As a person who knows somewhat about 3rd Generation RX7, I get asked what would be my choice of set up. People on the RX7club.com ask this all the time.. And as someone who likes to help others, I give them my opinion. I think that's what I would like to know from those who know about carputers more than I.

I am completely redoing my interior on my 3rd gen.. going to put Xenarc 7" screen and going to mold it in to my panel. While I wait for this to be finished, I would like to go ahead and buy all the necessary components.

If you veterans could let me know what your ideal set up (with in reasonable cost... $1000-1500.. minus the screen) I would greatly appreciated!

I would also like to eventually put touchscreen into all my cars and just move the computer from one car to another. I already have multiple car amps so that covers sound from carputer to car speakers.

    Thank You in advance!

two of the main problems you will see are power & heat.... the best setups will always be centered on a low power low heat design.... a mobile processor is ideal for a mobile install..... the best installs will use a pentium m or athalon xp-m

the fact that you want this to move from vehicle to vehicle tells me the best install may be a docked laptop... reserch laptop docking stations as they can vary widely in price availabilty & function... your ideal setup will be a dock in each vehicle.... sweet

your choice of laptop will be hevily dependant on the docking stations available..... choose the laptop based on the docking station is best bet..... you could use a laptop without a docking station too, but since you want to easily trasport from vehicle to vehice a dock will make your installs that much better....

Hmm.. I was thinking more like a small enclosed carputer and have all the wires pre-wired for each car.

Most likely I'll install this on my project RX7 and my other 7, Then maybe my daily.

It seems like it might be more of a hassle to get a laptop and not sure about automatic hibernation, boot up, and shut down. I guess I need to search about that.. Can you lead me in right direction?

The problem with that "thought" is that there are LOTS of cables and connectors to keep connecting, inconnecting, and reconnecting. This continual "connecting" nad "unconnecting" will eventualy, and it could be quite quickly, lead to the connectors wearing out, becoming faulty, and causing intermittent problems, as well as being a pain in the butt each time you want to move the computer.

The advantage to a laptop and docking station is that they are easier to power, and the docking station and connector is designed to be connected and un connected thousands, millions, gagillions of times. Additionally, it will make it SOOOO easy to switch back and forth.

Worhtwhile Laptops can be had for much cheaper then your budget, and with a couple of docking stations, might just come to about what you were thinking of spending.

If you read this Laptop vs Desktop you will see some of the advantages and disadvantages of desktops and laptops.

    Michael,

Thank you so much for that info. I've never considered a laptop for this project. I do have a huge 17inch HP and 14 inch Dell I might be able to use. I guess I need to read that thread and see if anyone mentions about shutdown and start up.. I also have a EZgo computer that I bought back in 2001.

NP. Now that you have a couple of laptop possibilities, look for docking stations for it, and get the one that is most integrated. Stay away from the USB versions, they won't be as much as help usually.

Also, depending on your needs, you probably don't even need a really powerfull computer. Something on the order of about a 1ghz unit, about 512 Ram, and you are good to go. The screen doesn;t matter, cause you will be using the one in the dash. Also, you can probably find good laptops on Ebay with broken screens, which will work perfectly for you.

    Good luck.

    Michael,

Thanks for that info.. Even though I have a PC (owned it for approximately a year due to work) I'm not too familiar with them. I been a Mac person since the 80's. I'm also not sure where about I should look for the dock stations?

One of the main concern I have and didn't see is how I am going to intergrate shut off/on via ignition. Or is this going to be something that I have to press a button all the time..

My guess is that I wouldn't be swapping over to one car to other that much. I've driven my FD maybe 20 times this year. And my project rx7 now is purely for show off. So, I'll be driving it even less.

Well, you should start reading and searching this website. Start here http://www.mp3car.com/vbulletin/the-faq-emporium/

Next, search the forums extensively. A good rule of thumb for searching is taking the noun and the verb of your question, and just putting them in the search function of the site. Such as "laptop shutdown" and "Laptop auto start" and soo on. I assure you, it has been done, and it isn't really that hard. No, you do not need a button.

Searching for docking stations is a search. Enter the laptop model number, and the words "docking station", and you will find many. If you do a froogle search, you will even be able to see prices and a place to purchase the units.

You can always use a MAC as a carputer. In fact, this site has a forum dedicated to MAC, you should check it out. http://www.mp3car.com/vbulletin/maccar/ I personally would not use one right now, because of the lack of Front Ends and other programs like Navigation.

In any event, if you are not really interested in switching back and forth, you can always just do a desktop in your car instead of a laptop, but that is something you should decide based on your needs, your budget, what you already own, and the pros and cons of each.
