every carputer needs a power supply. It provides power to the computer (and other various devices)

a startup shutdown controller is optional, and it simply does what its name states. You can set the controller up so that if your battery gets low, it automatically turns the computer off..there are many other settings depending on the model you get.

Take a look in the mp3car store, look at the products and read the descriptions. Also, take a look in the FAQ section, alot of your basic questions can be answered there.

Do you need a power supply? Yes.
Do you need a shutdown controller? No, but it's a nice thing to have.

There are power supplies available that have a shutdown controller built in.

Anything more you need to figure out for yourself.
Have you looked in the FAQ yet?
    How about the Wiki?

well thanks for the answers. once i had posted the ? i realized what i had asked. see what i would like to do is use a old pc that i have, (it has a 200watt power supply) and convert it to a car-puter. So i can use a power converter but would have to boot and shut down my car-puter every time i start and turn off my car. But a start up/shut down controller woud do it for me. If i am correct

Click on the link in my signature that takes you to the FAQ Emporium. There are several links in there that will give you the information you are looking for. In particualar, there is one on everything you need to know about power supplies.
