    Hi i'm new here

    Hi all,

Below is the base system I intend to build in my car . Dont really know much about the Via chipsets ! are they any good? is the processor any good on this board will it be efficient enough to run XP ? what about cooling I have heard that in car-puters over heat alot. I do have a few ideas on how to cure this but would like some expert advice before i buy. I also plan to run external sata cables to the rear of the car, to connect a HDD caddy which is removable and has large capacity for vids and mp3's / ape. also would like to incorparate a touch pad for the mouse with on off switch ! and various other toys. Any input on what i will require or have overlooked would be appreciated thanks!

Lots of people are running XP on similar boards than yours.
Hell, my laptop is lesser-specs than that (P-III 600) and I run XP on it just fine.

As far as your hardware choices, it looks like what the majority are doing. Personally, there's not enough oomph in the EPIA boards for my tastes, but it's certainly sufficient.

i did wanna go intel pentium M 2ghz but the case that i want didnt allow me to select it also wanted a gig ram! I understand there could be power issues! does any of the mobo's come with an external sata connection? The only down side to the intel board is the onboard graphics 'imo' the via offers a better graphics solution. i dont wanna have a soundcard and a graphics card on a riser sharing the same pci slot. For heat reasons and sharing the same irq jobbies. the only pci card i want is a terratec with optical out! Also dont understand why intel have'nt got centreno tech in the cpu's???? saves xtra on having to get seperate wifi usb! might wait til they do

Because Centrino technology isn't in the CPU. It's a combination of Intel CPU, chipset and wireless adapter that make up Centrino. It's all marketing.

The onboard video for the Intel Extreme Graphics (assuming that's what you refer to) is far superior to the S3 unichrome garbage that's on the EPIA boards.

really? i just dont like the intel onboard graphics had issues with it b4. but if its the best you can get then intel looks to be the way forward. I assumed that the centrino tech was in the cpu i hadnt looked into it that deeply, but would be nice if it could be onboard dont ya think ???

Nobody likes onboard graphics, especially for Mini-itx. It's implemented just to get the job done. Modern Intel stuff is as good or better than the S3 stuff, but still don't expect much from it.

Yeah, it might be nice if the wireless was onboard. But then of course you don't have any choice in the matter and can't remove it for upgrade. If you buy a motherboard with a mini-pci slot, you can get a mini-pci wireless card (just like what's used in laptops), and it won't take up much space. They are just a couple inches long, and maybe 1-2 inches wide. They also usually lay almost flat against the motherboard instead of being perpendicular to it.
