Smile carpooter in OLD 1988 Honda Ballade (Civic)

Hi there. I have recently had the misfortune of having my vehicle broken into and have decided that after 3 headunits, I have had enough. Ive decided to go the route of a carpooter. On MY VERY limited budget, I have decided to do one of 2 things, hence this post:
    1. I have an old Acer Travelmate 723 TX laptop that has been lying at home for about forever. Its a Pii with 128MB ram and a 10GB HDD. It has no battery and only runs on AC. (We use 220-240 V here in South Africa).
I want to remove the screen, take it apart and turn the screen around such that I am able to roof mount it. That way, I can use the hinges already on its surround and not have to battle with mounting it. I was planning to mount it just in front of the Rearview mirror. That way, I can always just flip it closed when not in use or whenever I need to...
I want to remove the touchpad and build a glassfibre mount for it next to the steering wheel, within easy reach. The keyboard poses a problem...

The problems: I want to mount the rest of the machine under the driver seat so the problem begs: how do I extend the cables and would doing so affect the signal from the motherboard to the screen?? What software/OS do I use? It currently runs MS XP Pro and I really like Quintessential Player for all media files...
Another problem I need to overcome is POWER. How do I power the machine up? I know I can use a DC/AC inverter but wouldnt the spikes and troughs generated by the amplifier cause problems??
Another thing: I recently discovered that the CD ROM on the laptop has decided to give up its ghost. Is there any other way I can mount a DVD ROM inside the vehicle, and use it while driving? I mean, if I do find one, and can afford it, wont it jump while driving?
I would truly appreciate ANY and ALL input from you, and plan to keep this thread updated on and progress I make.
FYI: I also have an old Mecer Pentium 2 desktop that a friend asked me to help with. Idiot formatted the HDD and then, out of frustration, threw a cuppa coffee at the machine. luckily, he didnt burn anything and it works quite fine. He doesnt want the dinosaur anymore, so I was wondering what I could do with it. Oh yeah, I dont really go on long trips. I was wondering about bootup times.... Wouldnt waiting for the machine to bootup, which takes about 3 minutes, be really stupid when I could have been at the destination already? Is there any way to have the thing work like those 'instant on' things you always see advertised on TV?
    PLEASE HELP A BROKE mutha!!!

    bumpety bump.
ok. I ed and ed and found ...
    nil. zip. nada. NOTHING.
I canna find any info on this here screen. Its from an ancient laptop that I had stripped for parts for my laptech PC...
Anyway, as you shall soon see, Ive stripped the screen and taken the housing off. I needed to do that to build the mount for it. As stated previously, Im gonna roof mount it. The Ballade has a really sturdy roof so I dont think that will be a problem. Since the travelmate and the dismantled housing are identical, I wont lose out. note to self: get a hold of an old LPT cable. Anyway, Ive also checked behind-dash space and theres none. GOD only knows where Im gonna put the motherboard. I thought about putting it between the hood lining and the roof, but Im worried about the heat. looks like Ill have to build a false floor on the passenger side of the car and put it under there. There might be a problem with interference though.
Just in from my amplifier-repair friend: I burnt my 400W Colibra amps. everything. the boards are charred. now THATS a bummer. Gotta go find me a new pair. I connected them to a pair of Kicker 800W 4 ohm's and pushed up the volume a bit... REALLY nice bass for a few minutes then the smoke came pouring outta the boot. Ill have to wait till after my wedding before I can even THINK about buying a new pair...
Anyways, as soon as I have pics of the custom housing I made, Ill post them here. I plan to mount 2 pr 6"x9" on the back shelf with a 6" pore in the centre. The boot is a real bass trap. NOTHING gets outta there and all you hear is rattles... The kickpanels will be dry in about an hour, so theyll be up after that. I didnt take any Work in Progress pics though...Im mounting one 4" 2 way pioneer with a Pioneer tweeter I found in my dads old toolbox in each panel. Rear door mounted 8" woofers will probably be overkill. Im gonna fabricate the pods anyhow, just to see how it goes...

What I really nee to do now, is get the laptop sorted. Im placing everything else on hold till I get place to mount the m/board from the laptop. Ive figured Ill take the touchpad and keyboard apart and make new cases.. mount them on the dash, left and right .. Itll make some space.
I need to find a dc-dc converter and regulator cos the travelmate requires 19V @ 2.4A, which is WAAAAAYYYYY more than my measly 14V. Any comments here would be appreciated.oh yeah, I dont know how to display images here, so I uploaded them and the y are attached. The pics are of my screen, after removal from laptop, after dismantlement, the ribbon I have to extend (I think) the OTHER set of wires I have NO IDEA what the hell they're for, and the Travelmate that I am thinking of using, in no particular order. Check the next post for the rest.

    de udder piks :)

heres the rest of the pics.
Ive included pics of the display that is a featurwe of the laptop. I have no idea what its for since Ive never seen it work. ANYONE wanna help me here?
Have fun flaming. Ill keep posting, just to #$^#$ the flamers off. I KNOW that Ive probably asked some questions that have already been answered. Ive searched. I know what was said in the answers. Unfortunately, I dont have a degree in electonics, so I dont know all the terms used. Thing is, I KNOW I have to extend SOME wires, and I KNOW I have to leave some alone. My problem is WHICH ones!!! Please refer to the pics and pray, do tell.

FYI:I DO appreciate any and all help. I DO plan to do this whether I get any helpor not. Ill just prefer if somewhere someone told me "Dont do this, itll mess this up" or "itll sound crappy". I dont expect you to tell me EXACTLY how to do it. I just need direction. PLEASE HELP! If I sound rude or obnoxious, My apologies. Im at work, its 22h30 and Im tired. Im stealing and posting this, with my laptop next to me on the floor transferring images (sorry about the size;I took them using my cellphone) via IR to the laptop and via flashdisk to the Optiplex which is connected to the net via DIALUP. Trust me, this connection is SSSLLLOOOOOWWWWWW!!!

What do you guys think of this:
    http://www.smartcomputing.com/editor...9g12.asp&guid=
not sure if the link will work. Check out the Acer travelmate 723tx. Its old, but it does the job. I have Ram maxed at 256MB and I have a DVD Rom in an external USB case attached to the USB hub i picked up for R20, which is dirt cheap!! Im waiting for a BTX PCMCIA card I bought from a friend for R100, which is also cheap. Seems my luck is really on the rise .
