sounds great would love to see what you've done...i am not sure how to dismantle an IBM machine...the only real reason i knew how to do it with the dell was i had completely dismantled my older dell, a Latitude CP (233mhz). I am guessing there they are all sort of the same...remove the keyboard by removing the screws at the back...then lift the screen and rest of the casing off the top thats all you should really have to do...then wire the switch in replace the keyboard, and screen if you want.. then and then seal the unit..i have yet to seal my unit yet...but i plan to mount it when either i get a new car or get the current fixed

    Regards

you should tin both components being soldered 1st.

Well the crash wasn't my fault therefore the other guys insurance or him himself is paying for it...

but as for the gps screen..yes its fine where it is...i have thought of moving it into the dash but i havn't had the time as of yet....most of the software works with voice commands, however there are a few things that i havn't setup to work via voice and it doesn't work that well when the music is up loud..i might need to mount a button on the dash for voice on and off on the voice command software

The reason i chose the ibm actually is because the power switch is a slide switch on the side. So if I run into any probs, i can simply reach under the seat and 'flip'!. Without having to pull it out and open it etc.

I'll document my little experiment and we'll see just how complex wiring up that side switch is.

If you manage to get that screen mounted in the dash of that (or a new) car, it'll look really sweet. my intention is to get mine as discrete and factory as possible (although i will be going for a flip screen, i don't have enough din room)

you really only need to connect two wires to the switch...the best way to find out is a) put one end of a wire onto the ground of the laptop..(Any substantial metal part of the case, and then the other end try the differnt contact points on the actual switch until it turns on

Ok my car is still waiting to get repaired..but why i have been waiting i managed to get a newer laptop that i had lying around to work again, put in a new 80gb hdd which solved my problem about the ipod as well..it is also 5 times as fast as the old one...i just need to get a new powersupply but they only cost $50AUS so i should be ok.

What i am looking for that i was unable to find using or is information on how to hack a cat5/6 cable so that when i press a switch it will close a circit and tell the computer there is a link on the network cable and to come out of standby/hibernation via WOL (Wake on Link).

    Regards

No matter what you want to call it, there are several ways to start a laptop. Do a search on wake on lan, wake on ring, wake on link, and WOL and you will find many threads discussing various ways to start your laptop.
