Got my MII10000 today!! (kinda long)

Hello all! I am still fairly new to the community and I have been planning on doing this CarPC idea since '97. My first attempt (in '97) was fairly successfull (however ugly it was it worked), it was just a intel 48x notebook, I used for Packet radio with my ham radio terminal node controller. It did all I needed it to except MP3s and audio, it was just a junk POS notebook for a basic terminal program (dos 6.2X and win 3.11 shell).

So I started getting back into my old electronics hobbies since my job in machine maint. required I stay sharp with the electronics end of the automated lines. The factory that I worked in made RTA Ready To Assemble furniture. If you purchased your computer desk from Wal-Mart (the corperate devils), Target or whatever, you may just be sitting in front of a desk I Quality Inspected or repaired the machine it was manufactured on. One night I decided to look into updating my car audio setup, and the headunits that had any capabilities at all were outrageous in price, one of the guys I work with said "Good God, that thing cost more than my new PC!" I usually read the forums at MX-3.com and I came across a member who had a Carputer in his MX-3, and decided that this was the route I would go as well.

Now the gist I decided on my components and have backup plans if the integrated devices are not up to par for my tastes.</p>
Here it goes: *=ordered! **=already arrived!!! ***ARRIVED AND WORKING!

**MII10000 Mainboard (Logic Supply for $174 shipped)
    *1 GB PC3200 Corsair Memory (Newegg.com for $74.00 shipped)
    *M2ATX Power Supply (MP3Car store)
*Ampie Case from the MP3Car store (thanks for your help Goche!)
*Panasonic slimline slotload DVD-ROM CD-RW (didnt see a real need for the DVD burner in the car) also from MP3Car store
*Slimline to IDE Adapter (from MP3Car store)
***Terk XMD1000 and made cable from components purchased at the local electronics store (not Radio Slack...those sell outs) for less than $8.00 USD

I plan to mount the CarPC under the drivers seat, and some friends at a local auto custom shop are going to help me with molding the CD-Rom and Display in the center console of the dash. I have not made concrete plans on which monitor to purchase but I have feeling I will go with the Lilliput 8" because of the resolution issues everyone else seems to be having.

I plan to integrate this with the existing car audio setup that I currently have, 1 Alpine V-12 pushing 4x 5.25" components, 1 Rockford Fozgate 600a2 pushing 2x 10"Rockford Subs in a custom molded enclosure (currently under construction as I type) and eventually when we get done with the custom dash I plan on adding a center ch.

I am still looking through the 2 way remote start car alarm installation manual to see if it will be a difficult proposition to be able to remote start the CarPC with out the Monitor powering on, but without restart upon starting the vehicle.

Any comments are appreciated, and sorry this is so long.
    John~

Looks good. Maybe get this thread moved to the Worklog subforum of Show off your project? Looks like you've got a good start. Have you decided on a frontend or if you're going to do a less that full (like minlogon or nlite) XP install or some other os like linux?

Well, I just received my RAM via ups today, and to answer your question....wow. I have been browsing and there are a few directions I may go but I am most likely going to be using a windows OS, I am just not very good at linux. I have used linux but I am just used to windows, there's just more I know how to do.

As for the front end I have been playing with one on my personal computer called Mobile Impact, but the dvd playback functions leave a little to be desired like FF FR next/prev. track. I also have had several issues with the external applications interface. I attempted to install Frodo Player, but I immedialy had issues with my XM and I couldn't get it to function for anything else. So I am not too worried about it though, I plan on working on the software for a while before installing the PC in my car.

I want to strip windows down to the bare minimum for stable operation. I haven't decided how I want to do this and it will be a lot easier after the rest of the components are ordered so I know which .dll files I am going to need. I am ALWAYS open for sugestions

I do plan on getting a worklog up and going or setting up my geocities site, I have already been taking photos of everything as I get it.

I am also looking for anyone who might know where I can find a copy of TouchXM it would be most appreciated.

This is kind of off topic but I am a ham as well and am thinking about an internet gateway via packet. I am wondering if I would be able to use just a plain old tnc on both ends. I have tried searching on the net for specifics on how to do this, do you have any suggestions for models of TNCs or whatever.

To be honest with you I only have experience with a MFJ Multimode and a little serial 9600 buad TNC. I was using that equipment when I was 14 and pretty much stopped all together with the data end around 97 (you know, car girls, gas, girls...lol seemed to loose interest in the hobby) I only just renewed my license and just in time too, now it's good until 2015. I also don't know the legalities of what you are proposing but I am certain that there has got to be a way to do it legally. My call is KB0QGG, I stick to 2meters sometimes 70cm, when I get the CarPC installed I will be getting back into Packet and other ham activities (cant wait to foxhunt with a wardriving setup or maybe that nice satellite tracking Icom serial controlled scanner...hmmm) let me know your call and what bands you use, seems as though HAM is a dying hobby, which isn't much of a surprise most of my friends cant even understand a thing about electronics. Most of my friends don't want to try to understand, they like to push a button and watch it work. I can say though without a doubt, if I hadn't gotten into Ham radio, I would never have gotten the understanding of electricity that I have now.

sounds like your planning is good.
I bought the 8inch lilliput for my 2006 honda Odyssey install thats in progress but it turned out that even though the honda oen nav has a 8 inch screen my lilliput 8inch is a little on the big side so Im having to fabricate a new dash insert and take the lilliput out of its case. (fingers crossed).

you don't have to take it out of the case, if you want to fab a dash go to digitalww.com and look under the lilliput accessorries, and you should find the "spare" cases. This way you can fiberglass and bondo all day, and not get a drop on your screen, all you have to do is swap em out when your ready for install. The best part is, that they are about $15-20 so it wont break you to avoid the mess.
