    Motherboard Comparo

BIOSTAR GEFORCE 6100-M7 Micro ATX vs. MSI K8MM-V Socket 754 VIA K8M800 Micro ATX

So the Biostar supposedly has great onboard video, but the MSI is a bit smaller at 9.6x7.6 vs. 9.6x9.6. The Biostar also has PCI-E but that doesnt matter because I wont be running a video card on it. Its only 8 bucks difference so price isnt a factor. Size is, but Im not sure if I really need those 2 inches or not. What do you guys think about the Biostars onboard video vs. the MSI's? If its that much better than Ill go with the Biostar..

Well, I looked at both and couldn't see were either supported the "CnQ" feature or S3 suspend. Those are 2 cool features I would look for.
The manual says the GEFORCE 6100-M7 doesn't support WN98SE or ME. So I guess you'll need to use 2000 or XP. Don't know if that is a issue for you or not. It does have a fan speed controller and Hardware Monitor. I couldn't find much on the MSI.

I would email both companies and ask about S3 suspend (if you want fast turn on's), CnQ (if you want to have the CPU run cooler and quiter) and fan control. I think those features are really good for a CarPC.

I would start reading the Newegg reviews and see if there are any issues you should be aware of. Make sure they have the feature you are looking for.

I'm using an older Biostar with the GeForce 4 and couldn't be happier. I don't have S3 and probably wouldn't use it due to battery drain. Hibernation works great for me and my PCs that do have S3 give me nightmares (although I think its mainly media center's fault).

I have a MSI with ATi graphics and it's pretty damn solid. No problems with it at all. I know you said you were going with an external video card, so it may not be an issue but I've read the unichrome chip can be a ***** to get working with the 800x480 res. Why use an external card? The GeForce 6100 on the Biostar has a pretty good reputation, more than adequate for carpc use. Unless you're gaming or something.

tbird2340 has the biostar motherboard in his sig. Might want to hit him up for some info.

If you are going to use Onboard video, go with biostar.
