    Exclamation Grip on software

    Hi

I am new to carputers, but I've understod that mp3car.com is THE comunity.

The thing is that I want a PC in the car. I do not want a new hobby! And I want to be able to upgrade my mediaplayer when next version is out there without major rework. And I want to be able to use the buttons that are already in the car. No touch screen. Factory built look.

If you want to know what I'm doing check out http://members.chello.se/bengt-olof.swing/
(even if I had not put the screwdriver into the dash as yet)

There is so much skins and sw out there that I've been overwhelmed, but I think I'm starting to get an overview now.

Please read thru this and correct my wrongs and add whats been left out.

    Girder/IBusComM/byRemote(before HIP)
These are all sw for getting button presses and remote control action into the win apps. Girder is generic, IBusComM has an understanding of IBus protocol in BMW's but do only send events to one application, and byRemote only translates to keyboards events. Not mouse events. (Has anyone generated windows events with IBusCom) Girder seems to have a nice user interface. You don't have to do everything in notepad writing .ini files.

    RoadRunnner/FrodePlayer
Skins that are constantly under development. Will operate together with Girder, byRemote or IBusComM and give a common look and feel to all apps that you are using on your carputer. Roadrunner is a Visual Basic program that require that you run winamp. Skinbedder is what you can use to do skins. Seems like never ending story to me.. (Sorry)

    Streetdeck
Readymade sw. Buy and use. Stuck for ever.

    CarX/ CarAmp/CarMes
BMW look and feel. Extend the use of the NAV system in BMW into windows applications. The concept is that you should not be able to tell if is the pc screen you see or BMW equipemnt. Built on top of IBusComM. Limited...

    MyHTPC (before meedio), Mediacenter PC
Media center focus. Pictures, Videos, TV, games, mp3.... Not really navigation or car diagnostics or telephone and such.

I am leaning towards Girder and just windows XP at the moment, just adding some buttons to correct app. No skins. But how will that look in 240x400?....

I do not know which is the least bad.

    Regards, Blof

That resolution will look like crap. In fact, I don't know if XP is capabile of a resolution that low. Maybe it is. I've never run such a low resolution, so I couldn't say for certain.

Either way, you're going to have an extremely limited amount of space for control functions. If you're going to utilize a touchscreen, that would present a problem.

Why are you limiting yourself to 240x400? What is the screen you intend to use, an OEM screen in your ride?
Have you looked in the FAQ yet?

    Hi P

I'm afraid that you are right. The resolution comes from the Widescreen BMW equip their cars with from factory. It is not an after market screen, and I will not add touch. But it is a 6.5" screen, so its reasonably big http://members.chello.se/bengt-olof....1_LCY00131.pdf

So you recon I have to go for a skin? Road runner, Frodo or MM (what is MM) ?

But then I'm stuck with whatever set of plug-ins that that skin supports. Right or wrong? (Is everyting with a skin called plug-in?)

    Cheers, Blof

PlugIns are additional modules to the software that provide additional functionality to the application
A skin is a set of graphical elements that give the application a different look and feel.

MM = MapMonkey, which is a wrapper that utilized Destinator mapsets. Destinator is a GPS navigation application. I don't use it, but I understand it integrates very well with most of the popular front-end software.

I've tried to find Destinator for PC without success. There seems to be only pocket PC versions in sweden..

Is it possible to run MapMonkey together with RoadRunner? Is it possible to mix in general? (I don't see why not, but want to make sure)
