    Recommendations?

Hi to all you carputer hobbyists. I have though about this hobby for a long time and have decided to jump into it finally. I would like to get recommendations from expert carputer people. I have and read the Car PC Hacks book (nice reading) and a budget of $1300 which can strech to $1500 but hope it won't have to.

First of all, I have included 3 pictures of my car to show you where things will go. This will give you a better idea of what I am trying to do. The radio will be replaced with the lilliput 7" LCD screen. If you have any other screen that might be better, let me know please. I will put a USB hub where the XM radio thing is. My carputer will be in the trunk, unsure where yet. I am also hoping to somehow put a CD/DVD player in the center console which you should see in picture #3. If I have enough space where the USM hub goes, I will put it there instead.

My carputer will be used for gaming(PS2 emulation, NES emulation, etc.), MP3 storage and playing them, FM radio, Navigation, on board diagnostics, DVD Playback, TV Viewing, and any other cool thing this thing can do.

With this in mind, I would need a carputer to handle this. I am not really sure what to get. This is where I would like recommendations. I can build the computer from scratch if this will save me lots of money.

I also have 2 amplifiers and 2 subs. One amplifier powers my 4 speakers and the other my 2 subs. I will be getting rid of my head unit completely so I will depend on the carputer for radio.

I will be starting everything from scratch which means i have no spare parts. Everything will have to be bought.

Please let me know what I need. My alternator is 100Amps. I also have a cig. lighter adapter in the trunk. Your recommendations will bring me from 0% complete to at least 5% :-). Progress is great.

    -Jorge

P.S. If anyone lives in Western Washington please let me know and maybe we could hook up and you can help me that way.

Humm...well look around. Read the FAQ's. You can drop as much $ as you want...you can also be patient and creative and spend way less. Be prepared to invest some serious time no matter what you setup is. Make a priority list and start there.

I don't know where else you'd put your lcd but in place of the radio would be a bad spot IMO. It is a bad viewing angle and there will a lot of glare I would think. If you could build it in at a straighter up and down angle and with a shroud it will help quite a bit.

This is the recommendations I am looking for. Thank you sfay93 and redian. I expected flaming because these type of questions get answered everyday about 1000 times. I do thank all of you for your help since all cars are different.

I think i will go with the lilliput motorized lcd screen. Now I run into other questions. Since I have a double din headunit, would it be beter to add a radio on that extra space or just go without the headunit(my original idea). I keep reading that the carputer will provide better sound anyways.

I know computer installs and very little about car audio installs. I am really scared about combining both of them. I have been reading up on it, trust me, and cannot find anything to help me out.

How am i going to get 2 amplifiers connected to the carputer. This might be an easy answer but I cannot think of it right now. Also, my first post in this thread explains everythign I want to do with this carputer. I read that playing games on the carputer will need lots of power. I am looking for recommended amount of memory to buy, processor speed, etc.

I guess I can say that I am 1% complete with this project. Thank you so far for all who have helped.

Last thing, is there an inexpensive single DIN carputer to put in the extra void I would have when removing my head unit?

    ok hows this.

I researched the specifications of din size on these forums and it looks like the Aopen Pandora MiniPC MP915-B SuperMulti PC sold here on mp3car.com is single din sized (off by about 1/4" in height and width). This will save me more space also because the DVD player is right there within my reach.

I was laso looking at the Mp3car MTSVO-SC Fully motorized VGA Touch Screen also sold here. I think this will make good use of the space I have.

What do you guys think? If this sound good to all of you out there let me know. Please keep in mind what my intentions are. I still will need advice on connecting my amps to the carputer.

*** I noticed that the cartuter i selected has onboard audio. Any recommendations what other sound card to get that will improve to sound quality for my sound system.*****

It all depends on how you want to power your sound. If you want to keep a radio the get one with RCA inputs on the back. Then you can feed your line level out of your PC into your head unit. That is unless you want to go 5.1 or something then you'd have to use external amps b/c I don't know of any 5.1 radios but I'm sure they are out there.

Also, have you considered a Double DIN screen radio combo? I've seen some off brands on eBay like this one....but I don't see VGA input listed. But I do know I've seen full double din screens w/ VGA inputs listed that incuded a DVD player and FM raio.

im going with what i said on the previous post(motorized LCD and single din carputer). I have my door speakers connected directly to the amplifier. Now the wiring harness is connected to the head unit of course. If i remove the head unit for good, how am i going to wire up the wiring harness from behind the head unit to the carputer.
Is this even required? My only probblem is the audio portion for this install. Everything I have found clear explanations in this forum.

I'm confused. I've read your post several times and I'm still not clear.

    1. Where are you mounting your carpc? Are you using the spare din in your dash for your pc?

    2. Will you have any speakers in your car not wired to amps?

    1. Yes since I have a double DIN radio, I will install motorized LCD on top and SINGLE DIN carputer on the bottom.

    2. No all my speakers have amp hookups. The 4 door speakers go to a 4-channel amp and the 2 subs to a monobblock amp.
