preformance and style??? *my first post*

im fairly new to the whole carputer scene and truthfully i havnt even got a carputer of my own. i do have friends with carputers and i do plan to do one as soon as i get a new car.

anyway being the one upper that i am i would like to go above and beyond the regular carputer, incorporating not only audio vidoe gps and other things but also a direct link to a preformance chip that i plan on installing. something where i can see how ****s going down in the engine and what i could do to make it better.

im sure this is "possible" but im not sure how in depth i would have to get in order to accomplish this.

if anyone has done this or just knows how please post here or if theres already a thread about this please point me in the right direction as i am a noob and i dont know how to search.

This really depends on the car (and the year it was made) and how popular is the computer (laptop) based tuning for that model is.

If you intend on getting an STi (or a WRX in general), there's a guy who writes nice software from South Africa. Google him out on the net.

You can help yourself with installing a carputer by reading through these forums, but it's better if you check a forum dedicated specifically to your future car's model to know what options are available.
Normally, you'd need to know if their tuner box is interfaced via Serial or USB, what the minimum requirements are, whether there's a real time mode, etc. Then you can choose your carputer accordingly.

maybe I've been out of the scene too long, but isn't this really only avaliable with stand-alone set-ups?

I'm unsure about the new tuning options out there though.

On our truck, we have a split-second auxillary injector controller that's programmable via PC/laptop/carpc, but it's no 'chip'

do they make chips now for performance that are programmable via OBDII or USB or Serial?

Please post on the forums! Chances are, someone else has or will have the same questions as you!

I know they had something like that for my previous car: DSMLink.
It would hack into the ECU's EPROM (memory chip) and modify the values. That's why you had to use a specific non-OBDII ECU from the '95 model of the same car.
