1. That's up to you, and whether or not you want the computer to start up and shut down automatically when you get in the car.
2. Again up to you depending on what you want to do, and can afford.
3. Do some light reading in the FAQs

"We can't help you unless you can help yourself"
hehe
I'm going to start using that in all of the threads...lol
the answer to the first two questions is that it's 100% up to you, you need to read up on the pros and cons of both and decide which fits your needs best
and what does living in australia have to do with needing a front end?

lol red . thats awesome.
as far as front ends, think of them as gui for touchscreen. for functionality try each one out and see what you like. you can download them in the software section.
For GPS. the software is standalone. and then you integrate it into the front end. you might want to look in the gps section to see what software is best for australia. and go with that one. most gps software is in the range of 100 bucks. youll also need a gps reciever that will run you somewhere around 80 or so.
as far as keeping your headunit. the only reason would be for radio quality. when building your system you can go with an audigy or onboard sound and have no problem outputting to your amps and speakers. theres hardware out there for fm radio; hauppage, radiator, etc., I would suggest staying away from those the quality of them sucks for the most part. if you get rid of your headunit and still want radio i suggest you looking into HQCT. it was designed specifically for computers in cars.
Everything depends on how much money you want to spend, how much time you want to involve in getting everything to work, and what exactly you decide to do. To be honest with you knowledge is the key. what money you have to spend on this hobbie will decide how quick it gets done or how nice, but without knowledge nothing happens.
Spend a few weeks reading thru the forums. ask yourself questions, and then search some more. and then those questiuons will lead to more answers yet still more questions. when you feel like you have a handle on what your about to do, then start to buy stuff based off your research and new found knowledge.
