@j282 - I have a 2003 A4 that I am putting a carputer in. Check my worklog in my sig, it has a neat diagram and pics and stuff!!!

It may help to visualize on a similar car so also search for other B5 platform Audi installs. Read, read, read... it all starts to make sense after a long time.

Good luck on your project and have fun!

EDIT: The answer to a few of your questions...

    Is there an LCD adapter?
No, not at this time. For your model you need to remove the dash piece and fabricate a LCD faceplate into it. I would recomend buying a spare dash kit to work on so you don't have to drive around dashless forever.

Can I use the factory audio system?
This is a question I am researching for my on project as well. Seems a LOC (Line Out Converter) is what is needed to connect audio out from the PC to the factory amp/speaker setup. Do you have the Bose system? Follow this thread for the progress of my audio hookup... Car audio question - 2003 Audi A4 - how to power it?

Also, start a worklog, it is helpful for people to give tips on your project and to organize your thoughts. Post pics too, people love pics...

People act as if it is so time consuming to glance at a post that may be redundant and then proceed to spend another five or ten minutes creating a post to belittle them. Personally, if I could help someone or answer there questions I would, then maybe suggest they take a look at the "Where to start" post, but you're clearly to busy being a jerk to answer questions. Also if this post is creating confusion because of the title I apologize that was not my intention.
Whoa. No name-calling. Your lack of looking before leaping brought this on.

In regards to your motherboard question, NO motherboard is designed for vehicle use, so you're pretty much in teh same boat as everyone else. The key is low-power, low heat, and small space. For some, the space isn't an issue. TheLandYacht's 2tb party taxi comes to mind....

To be honest, your proposed setup is WAY overkill for a vehicle. The Athlon64 CPUs draw a lot of power, too, which makes them poor choices for a vehicle environment where power is limited. I'm not saying you wouldn't be able to use it, but you're going to face some challenges as a result.
Have you looked in the FAQ yet?
    How about the Wiki?

Under normal circumstances, a signature would go here.

if new people to the forum searched more, there would be less redundant beginner posts. if there were less posts like this, then it would be easier to search. all you are doing is making it harder for the next guy. it's not about ripping you, it's about keeping the forum clean, useful and easy to navigate.

so let's try and make this thread useful for you, and the next guy/girl. here is more advice about component selection:

the first place to look is obviously the FAQ. enough said.

if you want to know component suggestions, why dont you look at the "show off you project section". there are plenty of completed installations. they list their components and you can get a good idea of what's being used. you can then look at your setup and see if it too much, too little, or not in line with the standard installation. then you could search the individual sections to determine pros/cons about your component versus the more widely used.

another way is to look at the (probably) hundreds of newbie posts entitled "check out my setup" or similar. because you are not the first person to speak before you think. you could see other people's questions and see the answers given to them. darque and others have reviewed and commented on countless newbie parts lists.

the bottom line is that there are probably many people is the same boat as you this early in the game. just about every question you can think of right now has already been asked. start reading and you'll find answers to the questions you have, and answers to questions you didn't even think about.

Freelander - much of what you went through the trouble of typing out has already been posted...for this very reason!

Only one thought... if you know that ppl are tired of spoon-feeding, and answering easy/absolute obvious questions, y do you start to begin with? And if you say that if you can't help, don't post, than don't come a day or two from now crying that nobody replied...

    Just my $0.02

BTW, the posts before me explained much of the process, and therefore i can't really add anything to it...
