Do i need the docking station?

    Hi all

I am planning to put my Sony Vaio Z1 series laptop in my car. As i have seen from many members' posts, they always install a docking station with a laptop. The main reason I can see why is that they only mess around with the docking station instead of the whole expensive laptop. Some people say that the docking station can disable the laptop screen and some other reasons. I am not really sure what the docking station for my laptop can do. Here is the link of the replicator.

Do i really need the replicator? For now, the one reason i want a replicator is that i need to install a remote power button.

How should i power my laptop? I am thinking of using an invertor because i want the laptop to be portable. I am guessing an invertor is easy since i just need to unplug the laptop. Correct me if i am wrong.

    what should i do?

    Thanks alot

As of today, I am using my laptop for my carpc also. I am looking into purchasing a used dell docking station for my laptop for the portability aspect alone. Since I purchased my laptop last year, I perfer to use it at work, home, and in my car. So, I want to be able to quickly detach my laptop from my carpc without having to take out all the wires. As I see it, thats pretty much the only reason you would need to buy one.

For me, the remote on switch isn't too important because if you are usually docking your computer into your car when you get in, then its not like its out of the way to turn it on too.

As for power, I have decided to use an inverter and attach it directly to the battery to free up the cigarette lighter. And if you buy the port replicator (make sure it has a VGA port, I guess some don't), then you don't have to worry about lugging around and plugging in the power cord everytime also.

Well i guess main reason to use docking station/port replicator is to minimize number of cables u have to attach to laptop/tablet/convertablet each time u take it in/out... sadly for my models port replicators cable is too short... i cant hide it properly and as such would be more harm than good.... so each time i go to car i have to attach three cables instead of one. This is of course obnoxious... but proof u do fine without port replicator.

For power, just order car/plane adapter for your laptop model...

Will the car adapter provide enough power for the laptop?

I found out that the docking station for my laptop has no power button, which means i can't make a remote power button from the docking station. I am really scared to mess up my laptop. PLUS, if i make a remote power button from the laptop, it means i can't disconnect everything when i need to use the laptop @ school. Any other way to do it?

    That is not true.

You can add a connector to the wires, so you can disconnect and reconnect the remote switch. I am not familiar with your model specifically, but you MIGHT even be able to mount the connector in the body of the laptop so that it will appear somewhat stock.

not this **** again. Search the forum for hundreds of threads on how to power on your laptop already.

Wait, let me make it simple for you. You have 2 options.

    1. Open up the laptop and solder wires into the power button.

    2. Forget about it.

Anyway its not cheap choige... considering what those lap-top makers ask for them... but atleast u know whos responsible if something goes very wrong...

I wasnt perfectly happy with mine though... it introduced interferance to sound... but adding second battery and drawing power to lap from dedicated battery allowed me to solve this issue...

Ofcourse u can always try to find generic manufacturers laptop car-loader... but if something goes very wrong... issue of responsibility goes bit more complicated....
